I feel that it’s a good thing, if you want to know how I think about it. Look, I may not be a vegan but that doesn’t mean I enjoy watching animals suffer for my own entertainment or as food.
In other words, I would hope for the animal to die a painless death if it’s to be served as food.
In fact, starting from 1 March, lobsters must be knocked out via an electric shock or “mechanical destruction” of the brain before being boiled in Switzerland.
Now, I’m fairly certain that lobsters are no strangers to you guys. When it comes to crustaceans, we’ll always bring up the age-old question:
“Eh, u think crabs can feel pain or not ah?”
In fact, that’s the exact question my friend asked when we went for a seafood buffet just a month back.
Let’s take a look at what the experts have to say:
“They can sense their environment,” said the executive director of the University of Maine’s Lobster Institute, Mr Bob Bayer. “But they probably don’t have the ability to process pain.”
Although that is the commonly accepted answer to the question, there are some who do not agree with it.
In 2013, a study in the Journal of Experimental Biology found that crabs avoided electric shocks, hence suggesting that crabs are capable of feeling pain.
Professor Bob Elwood, who was involved in the study, said that: “I don’t know what goes on in a crab’s mind… But what I can say is the whole behaviour goes beyond a straightforward reflex response and it fits all the criteria of pain.”
However, there is no way for us to tell if the crab’s response to the negative stimuli is a pain response or an avoidance response, according to marine biologist Jeff Shields.
The debate over the treatment of lobsters is still ongoing as we speak. However, no matter the situation, I think it would be good for us to be safe than sorry. Let’s just give them the benefit of doubt and not throw them into boiling water.
Just so you know, destroying their brains before boiling them isn’t rocket science either.
I’m not sure about you, but I definitely wouldn’t want to be cooked alive! That being said, what do you guys feel about the treatment of crustaceans? Would you still choose to boil them alive after knowing that they might feel pain?
