Popular Beach Road Chee Cheong Fun Stall Featured On Michelin Bib Gourmand List Suddenly Closes Down

Singapore’s food scene has witnessed its fair share of sudden eatery closures, often due to non-compliance with hygiene regulations, food poisoning incidents, or other factors.

While Cantonese dishes like Chee Cheong Fun are abundant in Singapore, only a few exceptional places like Sing Lung HK Cheong Fun on Beach Road stand out.

Sing Lung HK Cheong Fun, a local F&B establishment serving its popular chee cheong fun for the past two years, garnered recognition when it earned a spot on the prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand list for two consecutive years.

The Michelin Bib Gourmand is awarded to restaurants that offer exceptional value for money, providing a high-quality three-course meal at a reasonable price.

Unfortunately, fans of Sing Lung won’t have the opportunity to savour their delectable dishes for much longer, as the eatery has recently closed its doors after just two years of operation.

Sing Lung HK Chee Cheong Fun on Beach Road Closes After 2 Years of Operations

The closure of Sing Lung HK Cheong Fun was brought to light by a netizen who happened to be at Beach Road and passed by the now-defunct eatery.

Taking to the Can Eat! SG Facebook group on Monday (9 January 2024), a user named Andrew Cheong mentioned that the stall was empty and dark. He asked fellow group members whether Sing Lung had relocated to another spot.

He said that although the stall’s signage remained in place, the interior was dark and devoid of content, indicating that it had been emptied.

The news came as a surprise to at least one commenter, who mentioned dining at the stall just last year in December.

In response to Andrew Cheong’s post, other netizens expressed shock and sympathy for the eatery’s closure, recognising its delectable dishes.

Some attributed such closures to the challenges posed by high rental prices in Singapore, making it difficult for stall owners to sustain their operations.

One user commented: “Rental increase is never 5 or 10% but as high as 70% or more. Imagine the hawker slogged so hard, just to pay rent, profit so marginal, how to continue but to close shop.”

Sing Lun HK Cheong Fun Confirmed Its Closure in a Facebook Post

Sing Lun HK Cheong Fun sadly confirmed their permanent closure in a Facebook post on 30 December 2023.

They expressed gratitude to their customers but didn’t provide a reason for closing or mention any plans for reopening elsewhere.

With extensive Cantonese cooking experience, Chef-owner Kong Yiu Man created their renowned handmade, steamed-to-order chee cheong fun, praised for its light and silky texture.

The stall’s culinary excellence earned them a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2022, just six months after opening.

Michelin inspectors were particularly impressed by the “velvety texture” of their cheong fun, leading to another Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition in 2023 before their closure six months later.
