3-Year-Old Boy Got Leg Trapped In Escalator At VivoCity; SCDF Had To Be Called In

Kids – some days they make your heart melt, and other days they make you question your sanity.

Anyone who has a kid will know how difficult it is to bring them out in public once they’ve learned how to walk, as anything from a shiny toy to a pigeon can distract them.

And because they’re so young and naive, they’re unaware of the dangers present outside, whether it’s strangers, fast cars on the road, or escalators at VivoCity.

3-Year-Old Boy Got Leg Trapped In Escalator At VivoCity; SCDF Had To Be Called In

The Singapore Civil Defence (SCDF) had to be called in after a poor 3-year-old boy had his foot trapped in an escalator at VivoCity on Sunday (13 Sep).

A video of the incident was shared on TikTok by user @wonraekang0523.

In the video, several SCDF personnel and a couple – presumably the child’s parents – can be seen crowding around a boy on an escalator going down to level 1 of the mall.

According to MS News, the SCDF said they were alerted to the incident at around 2.20pm.

When they arrived, they found the boy’s foot trapped in an escalator.

Fortunately, the SCDF team managed to free the boy’s leg using a hyrdraulic rescue tool, and the boy was immediately sent to National University Hospital.

His current condition, however, is unknown.

Dog’s Paw Previously Trapped in Escalator at Same Mall

Less than a month ago, a dog got its paw stuck in an escalator at the very same mall.

The owner of the dog was bringing it along with another dog up to Vivocity’s 3rd floor at around 10am.

On their way up, an eyewitness said that the escalator suddenly stopped and they heard the leashed dog yelping.

To their horror, they discovered that the dog’s hind paw was trapped between the escalator gaps, causing it to come to a sudden stop.

Fortunately, the mall’s mechanic managed to free the wailing dog’s paw by dismantling parts of the escalator.

Man Gets Entire Leg Sucked in By Escalator

Escalator attacks on humans aren’t as rare as we think.

Last November, a 49-year-old man was going down an escalator in Kuala Lumpur when the escalator swallowed his entire right leg.

The man happened to be wearing slippers at the time, and they got caught near the landing of the escalator.

As a result, the escalator sucked in his slipper and his entire right leg was dragged into the landing of the escalator.

The man’s leg was eventually extricated, but he sustained a broken foot as a result.

Safety Tips

So, how do we avoid accidents on escalators?

Here are some safety tips to take note of when riding escalators, especially if you have kids:

• Never drag or slide your feet along the edge
• Always face forward and hold the handrail.
• Always hold children’s hands on escalators and do not permit children to sit or play on the steps.
• Do not lean against or reach over the sides of the escalator.
• Be aware that loose shoe laces, drawstrings, scarves and mittens can get trapped in escalators.
• Take extra precaution to avoid the sides of the escalator when wearing flip-flops or soft-soled shoes.

These escalators may seem like innocent machines of convenience, but they’re actually evil beasts waiting to swallow us whole.

So please be careful when riding an escalator, and remind your kids to do the same.
