Pa was but a simple man with little desires. He worked an honest man to provide for his family and had little else he was interested in. But there was just one thing that kept the spark in his eyes: bubble tea.
During the circuit breaker, I could see the fire in Pa’s eyes dying away day by day. Without bubble tea, he grew more irritable and would raise his voice for no reason.
We had tried making bubble tea on our own. Pa’s eyes glistened like pearls when I gave him the homemade bubble tea. But when he took the first sip, I can tell that it wasn’t good enough. The light in his eyes dimmed as if he was disappointed.
He could never tell me that, of course. Pa was too good of a man to discourage my efforts. Yet, his eyes and the condition of his body told us what we needed to know.
Now Pa lays on the bed, his pulse weakening every waking hour. He had gone into shock since the news that bubble tea shops are still not open during Phase One.
Me: Pa. Don’t worry. I’ll call a doctor. You’ll get better soon enough.
As I walked away, Pa firmly grabbed my hand.
Pa: No… All I need… Is just bubble tea.
Tears rolled down my cheeks. Snot then got stuck in my mask, causing me to choke and cough a little.
I wasn’t good enough to save Pa. But I know who could.
The front line heroes who still bring us bubble tea in the times of crisis. As they say, heroes never sleep. We just need to know where and how to find them.
It is time to assemble them.
