Elderly Died After Accident in Bukit Batok; Driver Arrested for Careless Driving

Make no mistake;

The road is a dangerous place.

And that’s especially so when it comes to the older generation…

Whose senses may have somewhat dulled with age.

Elderly Died After Accident in Bukit Batok; Driver Arrested for Careless Driving

An elderly man in his 80s has passed away, after he was hit by a car along Bukit Batok West Avenue 4.

The incident transpired on Wednesday (11 November 2020).

According to Lianhe Zaobaoan eyewitness had heard a loud thud in the vicinity, and turned around to see an elderly man on the road.

The victim was purportedly bleeding from his mouth, and was helpless as passer-bys came forward to help.

One such Samaritan was a certain Afiq Sumardi, who tended to the victim before the paramedics arrived.

According to him, the elderly man was not a cyclist, and he was also not guilty of any road crimes.

“I’m that big guy in the first picture tending to the victim & passers-by,” said Afiq in a post, which was uploaded onto Facebook page ROADS.sg.

“No, he wasn’t a cyclist, no, he wasn’t walking behind/in front a bus at a blind spot, please don’t speculate.”

Afiq adds that the estate is largely populated with the elderly, whose judgement may have become “hindered” with age. As such, drivers in the area, and HDB estates in general, should drive with that notion in mind.

“This estate is largely populated with the elderly,” he said. “Their judgement is hindered and they may do things rashly due to their old age.
“As drivers, we really have to slow down and be redundant when driving around HDB estates”.

Apparently, this is not the first severe accident that has transpired along this road.

According to the eyewitness who spoke to Zaobao, a cyclist had been involved in another road accident just a few months ago on the same road.

Unconscious State

According to news reports, the police was alerted to an accident along Bukit Batok West Avenue 4 towards Bukit Batok Avenue 2 at 8:33 a.m.

The victim was sent to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital in an unconscious state, and later succumbed to his injuries.

A 66-year-old male driver has since been apprehended in relation to the accident.

“The 82-year-old male pedestrian was unconscious when conveyed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, where he later died from his injuries,” said the police.

“A 66-year-old male driver was arrested for careless driving causing death.”

On The Rise

In 2019, CNA reported on the increase of traffic incidents involving elderly pedestrians.

Apparently, mid-year statistics from the Singapore police revealed jaywalking to be the cause behind many of such cases.

Earlier in August this year, an elderly woman was hit by a white van while crossing the road.

Jaywalking, actually.

She was subsequently taken to the nearby Ng Teng Fong General Hospital for treatment.
