WhatsApp, you’re a tad too late: Google has just introduced a video call service, and it looks awesome.
Called Google Duo, it promises to be a “simple 1-to-1 video calling app for everyone.” Looking at the introduction of the app, you can’t help but think that this is the FaceTime killer.

According to the official Google blog, anyone with Google Duo is able to make video calls with a phone number—there’s no need to sign up for a new account. The app will also automatically find people through their phone numbers; in other words, it works just like WhatsApp.
Google also focuses on the speed and reliability of the video call (something that many other video calls are lacking).
The most interesting feature is one called “Knock Knock”. On a typical voice call, we will only see the name and image (if you’ve saved one) of someone calling on your screen—Google Duo takes it to a whole new level by live-streaming the video even before you answer.
This feature, however, will not be shown automatically on iPhones unless the receiver has the app open.
The app is ready for pre-register and will be live in the next few days.
It was nice meeting you, FaceTime.
