California Fitness club at Raffles Place closed down abruptly. Netizens go all crazy

Whether you’re California Fitness club member or simply an active netizen who comment about everything online, the news of California Fitness closing all its branches in Hong Kong would have captured your attention. The report of its closure in Channel NewsAsia Facebook page has garnered over 1,800 Shares—not bad for a news that occurred over 2,500 km away.

The sudden closure in Hong Kong left almost 64,000 members in the lurch. The owner of the gym chain in Hong Kong, JV Fitness, has been found to have a debt of over $22.6 million. The 700 employees of the chain were also left helpless.

Despite that, a spokesperson told The Straits Times that “California Fitness Hong Kong and California Fitness Singapore operate separately and independently.”

The club operates in three regions (prior to the Hong Kong closure): Hong Kong, Singapore and China. Despite its name, it is established in Hong Kong in 1996, and used to have four outlets in Singapore during its peak: Bugis, Novena Square, Raffles Place and Ngee Ann City.

On February this year, the outlet in Ngee Ann City closed due to “variable business strategies and decisions… We stand firm in our belief of bringing fitness at affordable packages and everyone should continue to enjoy the advantages of healthy living.” Members were then given ten days to collect their belongings. Because of this, there were five complaints by customers to CASE who sought a refund of membership fees after the closure.

The latest closure at Raffles Place is even more abrupt: here’s the sudden announcement in Facebook and on the outlet.

Lest you can read it, here’s the text.

Dear Members,
Raffles Club is closed until further notice.
Members please proceed to Novena and Bugis Clubs.
Thank you.

A check on its official website still shows the outlet in its directory. However, the schedule for its classes at the Raffles Place outlet next week is empty, while the schedule for other branches is plentiful.

There have been no further updates so far.
