If you’re wondering whether it’s worth it to place a dashcam camera on both the front and back of your vehicle, this article will resolve your doubts.

After all, it seems like these scammers don’t just come for you from the front.

They’re equally fine hitting from the back.

Here’s what happened.

Man Falls Down Dramatically from Reversing Car That is Parking

On 17 July 2023, TikTok user @djfunkyt was almost the victim of an accident scam.

This incident took place at the open air carpark at 59 Upper Changi Road on 14 July 2023 at around 5.45pm.

44-year-old Chen Diyou (transliterated) was reversing into a parking lot when he heard the obstacle warning sound going crazy.

Looking into the rearview mirror, he spotted an older man dressed in grey nonchalantly walking slowly behind his car.

Chen had immediately stopped the vehicle.

However, the man knocked into the back of his vehicle nonetheless before falling down in a dramatic fashion.

If you’re on the scene, you’d probably have thought he was bowled over with great force. So great that both of his legs were pointed towards the sky.

Allegedly Demanded $100 to See the Doctor

Upon alighting, Chen saw the man lying on the ground, shouting in pain. He reportedly has a wound on his right knee as well.

The man claimed that he was at the carpark to help someone but got knocked over instead. He blamed Chen for hitting him with his car.

The man said he was a cleaner, Chen said, and since he did not want to magnify the matter or call the police, he decided to give him $50 as medical fee.

Who knew that the man lying on the ground decided it wasn’t enough. He allegedly asked for $100 instead.

Suspicion

Finding the matter suspicious, Chen asked for the man to leave his number behind.

He asked the man to see a doctor, then send him the bill and he’ll make the appropriate payment.

However, the man refused, saying he has no money to see a doctor.

That was when Chen decided to take a look at his dashboard camera footage.

Because he did not have a SD card reader with him, he called his sister who lives nearby for help.

When she’d arrived at the scene, the man had already disappeared.

Police Report Lodged

After checking through the footage, Chen determined that the man had intentionally hit the back of his vehicle to earn some money after it came to a stop.

The grey-shirt man could also be seen at the start of the video, when Chen was driving into the car park.

He’d made a police report with his dashboard footage.

Comments on his TikTok video showed that his isn’t a unique case.

There was one where the issue was allegedly resolved through staring.

In another case, the trick was similar, except this time, a motorcycle is allegedly involved.

Moral of the story? Have working dashcams in your vehicle, as many as you like. The best is to surround your car with cameras, similar to high-tech police cars.

@djfunkytHow I Almost Got Scammed in Car Park Date: 14th July 2023. Time: About 5:45pm Location: 59 New Upper Changi Rd This man rammed himself into my reversing car and made himself fall over like a cartoon character! After that, he pretended to be injured and even showed me a graze on his right knee that was self-inflicted prior to the incident. He said he had no money to see the doctor and asked me for $100. I stepped away to make a phone call and then returned to take my car camera SD card and to escort him to make a police report but he (and his uncle friend) disappeared. There were also 2 shady bystanders asking me about the incident later on and one claimed to be police from Bedok. Showed me a police pass too, which I believe is fake. Beware people, these guys now operate in groups (with lookouts etc) and they are now targeting reversing vehicles. They probably hoping that there’s no rear car camera. I’ve filed a police report and I’m gonna file one more for the bystander impersonating a police officer. Friends, please share this video so that the community is aware that scammers have updated their strategies.
