Car Flew in the Air on Upper Bukit Timah After Being Sideswiped When Another Car Changes Lane

The road can be an incredibly dangerous place.

As you’ve probably seen in countless online videos, motorists only have to take their eyes off the road for a second to cause serious injury to either themselves or those around them.

Speeding is often the reason for these accidents, but sometimes, as in the case of an accident in Upper Bukit Timah, it was simple misjudgment.

Car Flew in the Air on Upper Bukit Timah After Being Sideswiped When Another Car Changes Lane

A car was sent flying on Upper Bukit Timah after it sideswiped a vehicle that abruptly cut into its lane.

A video of the incident was shared on the Facebook group SG Road Vigilante.

According to the group, the accident occurred on 6 Nov at around 6.53 pm.

At the beginning of the video, which was taken from the rear dash cam of a car ahead of the accident site, a grey car can be seen with its left blinker on.

It was in one of two rows of cars that were turning right at the junction of Upper Bukit Timah Road and Gombak Drive.

The two turning lanes were presumably not given the signal to go, which is why only those going straight were able to proceed.

If you’re a driver, you’re probably familiar with the struggle of being stuck in a lane which allows motorists to go straight and turn.

You intend to go straight, and so you try to shift lanes so you don’t have to wait for the magic green arrow to appear.

However, changing lanes here can be dangerous as cars in the straight lane are going at a rather high speed while you’re stationary.

This is why your judgment needs to be precise when you change lanes in this scenario.

But that’s not what happened here.

Two seconds into the video, a white Mercedes behind the grey car pops its head out and suddenly shifts to the straight lane next to it.

It’s then sideswiped by an oncoming car in the lane it was moving into, which sends the car flying.

This causes the white Mercedes to bump into the grey car next to it.

Some of the sideswiped car’s parts break off and scatter all over the road, and the car with the camera drives off.

The sideswiped car ends up in the middle of the intersection, and other vehicles drive around it.

27-year-old Woman Hospitalised

The police said they received a call about an accident involving four cars along Upper Bukit Timah Road toward Jalan Anak Bukit at 6.49pm on 6 Nov.

A 27-year-old female driver was conscious when she was taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.

Two other people involved in the accident sustained minor injuries, but refused conveyance to the hospital.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Here’s some advice: if you’re driving next to a congested lane which will likely have cars merging into yours, go slow, and anticipate vehicles abruptly shifting to your lane.

And if you’re in the congested lane, just be patient, and only change lanes you’re certain it’s safe.

Some extra prudence can help prevent such accidents from happening in the future.
