A furry friend that recently attempted to get a free ride on our little red dot’s efficient MRT system has been caught red-handed in a video that has since gone viral.
With more than 103,000 views garnered since its upload, @jiannaaaaah, a TikTok user, captured footage of an adorable feline as it made its way down the stairs of an MRT station.
However, the cat’s attempt to hitch a ride on our public transportation system was thwarted by MRT staff, who promptly escorted it out.
Cat Spotted at MRT Platform
As many pet owners know, the Ministry of Transport has regulations that forbid animals from riding public buses and trains for reasons related to hygiene and religious beliefs.
However, an exemption to this rule is made for guide dogs who accompany visually impaired commuters.
These service pets can ride on buses, trains, train stations, and bus interchanges to assist their human companions in navigating their surroundings.
One furry feline didn’t seem to get the memo as it was spotted trotting down a staircase of an MRT station, seemingly on its way to the platform to hitch a ride to Meowtown.

Unfortunately, before it got to board the train, it was spotted by two MRT staff at the platform. After succumbing to the irresistible urge to pet the cat, the staff gently escorted the feline friend out of the station.
The cat didn’t seem to mind getting escorted out, as it appeared to follow the staff members obediently.
Perhaps it understood its offence of committing fare evasion, which SMRT takes a severe view upon, and decided to follow the staff members along to “pay for” its crimes.
The staff, too, to their credit, treated the cat very gently even though it attempted to commit fare evasion.
Furry Friends Hitching Free MRT Rides
Funnily enough, a rat was also recently caught hitching a ride on an MRT train travelling along the East-West line.
According to reports, as the train was leaving Dover MRT station, a tiny black figure darted through the feet of passengers on board, causing a number of them to react in alarm by lifting their feet.
On 28 April 2023, a video was shared on TikTok by @salimscorpio, which has since gone viral with over 230,000 views. In the video, a rat can be seen scurrying across the train, eliciting panicked squeals from some passengers who anxiously lifted their legs to avoid it.

Unlike our feline friend, however, this sneaky rat managed to board the train and essentially hitched a ride to its destination without paying a fee.
According to a follow-up video uploaded by TikTok user @salimscorpio, three SMRT staff members were alerted to the rat’s presence on the train and boarded it to catch the rat.
However, the rat was already long gone before they could find it.
We suspect that the cat caught in @jiannaaaaah’s video was perhaps acting as Tom to Jerry and was on its way to hunt, no find, its rodent friend who had successfully hitched an MRT ride for free.
