Singapore’s trying to become a car-lite city.

I mean, even before ofo and Mobike came into the picture, the Singapore Government was trying to launch a bike-sharing scheme and build bicycles paths around Singapore.

Another initiative they have to encourage non-car-ownership in Singapore is the Car-Free Sunday SG events held in the city on Sundays.

Typically held on the last Sunday of the month, this month, they’ll be extending the one-day event to a three-day celebration.

Drivers, Take Note Of The Following Road Closures:

Now, before we get to the celebrations, let’s give some important PSA first.

The following roads will be closed from 8 am – 12 pm at the CBD Loop, Telok Ayer Loop and Civic District Loop for three whole mornings.

So if you’re driving to work on Friday, make sure you drive to your destination before 8 am, or give some buffer time for getting lost.

We’ve tried driving into town when roads were closed for F1. We were late for 2 hours for a meeting with a client.

But Road Closures’ Just The Tip Of The Iceberg

The Urban Redevelopment Authority is not just looking to close roads. They’re also getting ready a line up of “very interesting programmes” in the area.

They’re looking to transform the “streets and public spaces in the Civic District and Telok Ayer Conservation Area into vibrant activity hubs”.

Expect guided tours of Thian Hock Keng Temple, Yu Huang Gong and Nagore Dargah Indian Muslim Heritage Centre.

Live Music, Go-Karting on Roads, Dancing

There will also be food trucks along Fullerton Road, live music with Live Out Loud: Battle of the Bands programme and NParks’ 10th edition of their concert, Rockestra on Saturday evening from 5-11 pm.

And on the final morning of the event, 5.5km of roads in the Civic District and the CBD, as well as the Telok Ayer Conservation Area, will be closed between 8 am and 12 pm.

People will be able to run, jog, cycle or walk on the roads without worries. No bicycle of your own? It’s okay. There’ll be bike rentals, outdoor yoga and sports event to test your mettle at.

If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can also join the dance carnival, Got To Move Spotlight, organised by the National Arts Council.

Plus, you can now want to feel like an F1 driver? Make your way to Telok Ayer and the CBD between 9 and 11 am and try pedalling a go-kart on public roads.
