Remember back when freak escalator accidents in China was a thing?
It was so bad netizens started putting pictures of riding escalators safely online. Like the one below:
Back then, we laughed at them and tell our friends, heng ah I stay in Singapore. At least here got a bit more standard.
Well, they might just be having the last laugh now. Because we have our own escalator woes here.
Here’s what happened at one of the shopping malls in Singapore just a couple of days ago.
The Centrepoint Shopping Mall B1 Escalator Collapsed
The incident took place at The Centrepoint Shopping Mall on 7 Sep 2017 (Thursday) at around 2.05 pm, according to media reports.
The Stomper who reported this incident to STOMP said that he was with his four-year-old daughter and maid.
They were on their way home at the time of the incident. His daughter was in the pram and his maid was a few steps behind them.
When they got off the escalator, he was alarmed to hear an “incredible crunching sound”.
He immediately shouted at his maid to jump off the escalator.
Maid jumped off escalator in the nick of time and only suffered a scratch from the incident
Luckily, the 25-year-old maid was able to react fast enough.
She escaped the incident with a scratch on her leg while the step she was standing on previously collapsed.
If she was still standing on the step, it’s highly likely that her legs will be crushed.
Security only turned up 5 minutes later
The man commented that other than the collapse of the escalator, he was also disappointed at the mall’s response time.
It was only 5 minutes later that a security guard turned up to investigate the source of the disturbance.
What’s worse, to him, was how the mall handled the situation.
Three to four technicians appeared at the scene but he noticed that the escalator was not cordoned off until much later.
The building management has contacted him on 8 Sep 2017.
Building Construction Authority(BCA) Informed, Conducting Investigations
A spokesman for BCA confirmed that the mall had reported the incident to them.
BCA suspended the escalator’s operation and will only allow it to resume operations after the escalator is rectified to their standards.
BCA will be sending their engineers to inspect the escalator but the mall also has to engage their own Authorised Examiner to investigate the incident and provide recommendations for rectification works.
The mall was built back in 1983 and underwent a revamp back in 2005.
If the mall had not changed the escalator during the revamp, it’ll be 34 years old this year. That’s probably older than most of you reading this article.
But the main takeaway from this article is this: Use the lift when you have a stroller or a pram.
Think about it. If it was the man and his daughter who kena the collapsing step, how is he going to jump off the escalator with the pram?
Agree?
