Before 2018, or the advent of Japan and China, we thought that facial recognition systems are used for important tasks.
Like keeping doors locked.
Or surveillance for the national police.
But have you imagined it to be used for giving out toilet paper?
And no, it’s not Japan.
It’s China
We all can’t deny that when it comes to technology, China’s fast catching up to the rest of the world.
I mean, even Singapore’s PM Lee was talking about how we need to chase China’s butt when it comes to cashless spending.
But now, China is turning one of the most sophisticated technology towards a necessary evil: controlling the amount of toilet paper a person can use in a single toilet visit.
Here’s How It Works
You stand in front of a machine that scans and remember your face.
Once it’s done, it’ll dispense exactly 30cm worth of toilet paper to you. For free.
(Too bad if you laosai or have a butt as big as my boss’s)
After that?
Even if you want to pay for it, you won’t be able to get toilet paper from the machine for some time.

But the use of the facial recognition system’s just one part of the equation.
What really made this picture go viral is due to the design of the machine.
OMG, It’s Staring Right Into My Eyes
It’s the glowing eyes (like Ironman’s, if you look closely), that’ll creep you out.
Imagine this:
You’re in the mood and you’re ready to fill up the toilet with your chocolate cake after not defecating for days. And there you are, ready to get into action.
All you need is some toilet paper.

Then, this machine suddenly snapped its eyes open and gazed upon you like Thanos or 包今天.
Whatever feel or shit that’s crossing the customs will probably decide it’s a good idea to zupp back up to its rightful place.
No one knows what prompted the developers to design the machine this way. But the toilet dispenser machine first popped up at the public restrooms of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.
Too Many People Hankering After Free Toilet Paper
According to a report by Shanghaiist, the machine was put into place to combat against toilet paper thefts.
Yes.
Toilet paper thefts.

Locals were visiting the toilets to get as much toilet paper as they can carry. It got so bad that the temple had to go through 30 rolls of toilet paper per day. Per restroom.
Welp, enough is enough.
And facial recognition toilet paper dispensers were installed at the public restrooms.
The entire process only takes 3 seconds and will dispense a 60cm-long toilet paper every nine minutes for one person.
On Weibo, there were many who were mocking this innovative solution, with some saying that the amount of toilet paper dispensed just isn’t sufficient for use.

But one did say that such a system should be rolled out across the country.
Wish granted.
Well, I hope there’s a device in Singapore that chases toilet hoggers away from the restrooms. Agree?
Give each cubicle a maximum of ten minutes, because there’re too many people hogging the toilet just to siam work and Instagram for hours.
