Many among us have this conception that if a person is beautiful and succeeds professionally, that success is due to that beauty.
This is often worse for women, hence appreciation of their effort is often undermined by the way they look.
In a weird and disturbing way, that occupation with looks may have, instead of simply eroding a person’s career, saved it.
A female reporter was ‘publicly forgiven’ after people could see how she looked.
Wait, on second thought…I think we make a mistake lah; how can someone like her make any mistake?
Right?
Multiple Mistakes
Xing Chengbo, a reporter in China, made several mistakes when covering Chinese national footballers.
The article was meant to cover China’s latest challenge against Japan in the EAFF E-1 Football Championship held on Tuesday.
However, in an article that was published by Ban Dao Du Shi News, the reporter spelled 15 out of 23 of names of the Chinese national footballers wrong
For example, she wrote Zhang Xi Zhe’s (张稀哲) name as “Zhang Xian Zhe” (张贤哲), and used the wrong Chinese character for Wei Shi Hao’s surname (魏, when it was supposed to be 韦).
It’s the proofreader’s fault!
Backlash
As expected, Chinese netizens reacted swiftly and harshly, with many condemning her carelessness and lack of ability as a reporter.
“She was assigned a job even with such a (low) calibre? The criteria are too low.”
“Why aren’t the editors dealt with? Are they simply responsible for eating (and not doing anything)?”
Things got worse when netizens realised that she was, in fact, an experienced reporter and had covered other major games, like the 2014 Asian Games and 2018 Fifa World Cup.
As a result of the large backlash, the reporter was unfortunately demoted to being a trainee reporter.
However, digging into this reporter revealed other things that netizens looked upon favourably.
Looks Over Competency
After finding out how the reporter looked, the anger dissipated and was replaced with a weird, weird fascination.
Did anyone notice that she was holding on to a can drink? We didn’t.
After the pictures, online opinion shifted.
“After looking at your Weibo, I believe you’ve made the mistakes on purpose. I stan you!”
Some just made outright lewd comments:
“With that butt alone, what a shame to be a sports reporter!”
But jokes aside, it is actually quite disturbing to be commenting on women’s bodies or to use it as a reason for certain opinions.
Although the comments on her work performance are unnecessarily mean, it is definitely not necessary to be commenting on how a person looks like, and not to mention let that affect your perception of her professional life.
I mean, if you know how our boss looks like, then the entire company is an unforgivable mistake.
