Calling out to all Singaporean foodies, 2019’s going to be a very sad year for all of us.

At least for the first half of the year.

Because one of the greatest food places in Singapore is going to close for a couple of months.

Chinatown Complex.

So if you have any favourite stalls you cannot live without in Chinatown Complex, here’s what you need to know.

Chinatown Complex To Close For Renovation

The Chinatown Complex will be closed for renovations from 1 Mar to 31 May 2019. This includes the explore-worthy market on the first floor and the food paradise on the second level of the building.

Originally planned for Oct 2018, the Chinatown Complex Hawkers’ Association requested for the renovation to be delayed until Chinese New Year in 2019.

Now, while the closure might be painful for some Singaporeans, especially those working in the area, it’s necessary.

Because just like surgery, the short closure is going to be good for the entire complex.

They’re going to make the place cleaner, safer and more comfortable

Chinatown Complex has been around for a long time. Probably, probably even longer than some of you reading this article right now.

Built in 1983, the complex has more than 700 stalls selling food, produce and other stuff you’d ever wanted.

The renovation will see all the main pipes in the sewer line replaced. The exhaust, jet fan and fresh air systems will be serviced as well.

Wall fans and fire protection systems will be replaced and the current toilets in the complex will be upgraded.

Basically, everything’s going to be overhauled so when it’s back in business, you’re looking at a place that’s going to be cleaner, better and more comfortable for customers and hawkers alike.

The floor of the wet market will also be re-tiled so that people won’t slip on it and fall, especially the elderly.

Some Businesses Might Take This Chance To Retire For Good

A stall owner that TNP spoke to said that while there will be an income loss on the owners’ side, the renovation is needed as Chinatown Complex “is a very very old building”.

However, he added that businesses with very old owners might just take this chance to close their business for good.

So if you love the Tang Yuan at Dessert Station or the Hong Kong soya sauce chicken noodles, you might want to make plans to eat it once more before it closes for a couple of months.

Just saying.
