When you work, you have targets to meet and expectations to smash but what happens when you don’t meet them? Likely a loss of a chance to promote, less pay raise and performance bonus, right?
But sometimes, bosses come up with creative punishments to motivate their employees to work better. And this is one such incident.
A Cruel Punishment in Hangzhou, Shaanxi Province
A sales group of young employees from a union of 10 construction companies were gathered in a plaza in downtown Hangzhou. A man was spotted carrying bags containing mealworms, baijiu, chopsticks and cups to the meeting.
The leader of the sales group stood at the front of the group and called out the names of people who failed to meet the sales target. It was reported that there were 5-6 employees who took the punishment and had to eat 4 worms for every customer they lost.
A pregnant woman was supposed to be punished but she refused as she was afraid that something might happen to her unborn baby.
Against the Labour Law in China
The Labour Law stipulated that any employer who penalise poor performace with forced consumption of insects would be considered as corporal punishment and can be reported by the employees.
They are also able to seek financial compensation from said employers.
This isn’t the first time it happened
An employee had claimed that this wasn’t the first time such incidents have taken place. In previous occasions, they had to swallow squid and live ants as punishment.
When questioned about the practice, the employer defended itself by saying that everyone agreed to this previously, and that this punishment was meant to raise productivity.
