If you time-travelled from 31 Dec 2020 to 31 Dec 2021 and visited Clarke Quay, you’d probably wonder if SpongeBob SquarePants had eradicated COVID-19.
People could be heard chanting his name in the streets that day while they gathered in huge numbers without face masks.
But alas, the virus is still here. And so are inconsiderate folks.
Naturally, netizen anger was directed at the authorities for not controlling the situation. But it seems that this may have been impossible task.
Crowd in Clarke Quay Party Was Reportedly ‘Too Big to Control’
An eyewitness of the now infamous and impromptu party outside Riverside Point revealed that 10 police officers had been at the scene.
Speaking to TODAYonline, the eyewitness said the police officers were talking to people in the large crowd, telling them not to mingle and trying to control the people, but to no avail.
The crowd was simply “too big to control,” he said. There were no safe distancing ambassadors at the scene, however.
For those who have just woken up from their New Year’s Eve drunken daze, the hoo haa began when videos of hundreds of people gathering in front of JUMBO seafood restaurant were uploaded online.
The people in the party had gathered to usher in the new year, but in the least responsible way possible.
Many of them were not wearing masks, and with Omicron spreading quicker than a lie on WhatsApp, netizens were not pleased.
The crowd also sang the SpongeBob SquarePants song during their countdown party, and the only possible reason we can attribute this to is alcohol consumption.

A Superspreader?
The COVID-19 multi-ministry task force responded yesterday (2 Jan), describing the party as a “potential superspreading event”, and also noted that the event had “blatant breaches” of safe management measures.
They said enforcement agencies are currently looking into the matter, and once again reminded the public to exercise civic responsibility during the pandemic.
They urged residents to adhere to safe management measures so that “the situation will continue to improve, and we can look forward to 2022 being a significantly more normal year”.
Some people say last December was the 24th month of 2020, and it certainly feels that way, with the Omicron variant spreading across the globe, prompting lockdowns and border restrictions.
If we don’t want Dec 2022 to be the 36th month of 2020, we should certainly stop breaching the very measures put in place to end this raging pandemic.
Let’s hope that if people are still gathering in large groups and chanting “SpongeBob Squarepants” at the end of 2022, that it’ll be because it’s safe and permitted.
