Authorities Respond to Clarke Quay Countdown Party & Are Looking into the Matter

Celebrating the new year surely means that we get a free pass from getting COVID-19 right? After all, the virus must be taking a break from infecting people to go have a celebratory drink.

Just kidding, but a crowd of party-goers in Clarke Quay somehow managed to travel to a parallel universe where singing the Spongebob Squarepants theme song made COVID-19 disappear, and partied the night away on New Year’s Eve (31 December).

NYE Countdown Party at Clarke Quay

New Year’s Eve 2021 saw hundreds of people gathering in front of Riverside Point near Read Bridge, in front of JUMBO seafood restaurant, shouting and cheering to ring in the new year.

If the close proximity of the crowd wasn’t bad enough, here’s the nail in the coffin: many of them were not wearing masks, in videos circulating on Tiktok and Instagram.

Gasp! Doesn’t this sound like a super-spreader event?

Dear reader, you are absolutely right—and the authorities thought so too.

Response from the COVID-19 Multi-Ministry Task Force

A statement by the COVID-19 multi-ministry task force on Sunday (January 2) labelled the party “a potential superspreading event”, and also noted that the event had “blatant breaches” of safe management measures.

They added that enforcement agencies are currently looking into the matter, and further reminded the public to exercise civic responsibility during this pandemic.

They urged us to adhere to safe management measures so that “the situation will continue to improve, and we can look forward to 2022 being a significantly more normal year”.

Truer words have never been spoken.

With the Omicron variant of the virus being more transmissible than previous variants, there are rising concerns over a potential new wave of cases, even without parties like these that ignore COVID-19 completely.

Stay safe, and until we find out how to access the multiverse, please remember to wear your mask and not go partying with hundreds of people.
