Last Saturday, an unfortunate incident happened over at Tampines Mall wherein a worker died after he fell through the ceiling at Tampines Mall on Saturday.
According to The Straits Times, at around 1.30am, the 26-year-old Indian national was cleaning the walkway above the atrium ceiling on the fourth storey.
That was when he fell and crashed through a false ceiling and landed on the third storey.
He was rushed to Changi General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) told The New Paper that the man was employed by Cleaning Express and that CapitaLand Retail Management is the occupier of the mall.
The MOM official said that investigations are currently underway and in the meantime, all cleaning tasks have been stopped above the atrium ceiling.
This is the fourth fatal workplace accident that has taken place thus far in 2020 alone. And bear in mind we are still in January.
Other Incidences
Other incidences that have occurred involved a worker being crushed by a toppled pallet of gas cylinders, while another was hit by a falling piece of the structure he had been moving.
The last fell from a tugboat and into the sea.
On 19 January, MOM took to Facebook to address the deaths and said that it did not bode well for workplace safety and health in Singapore.
In November last year, nine workers died from workplace accidents in that month alone. It was deemed one of the deadliest months for workers that year.
Since then, MOM ramped up enforcement by launching a two-month enforcement blitz from the middle of December 2019 by having 400 surprise inspections.
Thus far, around 230 inspections have taken place and when there were hazards spotted, stop-work orders were given.
So far, stop-work orders have been given to four workplaces. The government has said that they will take strong action against companies that put its workers at risk.
