There’s a reason why you should pay attention to notices pasted by your town council, especially if you’re living in an older flat.

Or you could just end up like this unfortunate resident with around 300 cockroaches settling down in her home.

Here’s what happened.

HDB Flat Filled With Cockroaches

On 11 Nov 2020, Facebook page All Singapore Stuff uploaded a video of a cockroach infestation in action.

The caption of the post indicated that this happened after fumigation and questioned how long the town council had neglected applying “pesticide”.

Dr Chee Soon Juan

They’re not the only ones either as a well-known politician, Chee Soon Juan, took to his Facebook account to highlight the incident as well.

Identifying the location of the incident as Blk 203 Bukit Batok, the resident alleged that about 300 cockroaches invaded her flat from the rubbish chute after fumigation the week before.

Seeing as simple fumigation resulted in such a terrible infestation, the resident had wondered when the last fumigation took place.

Dr Chee suggested that the town council might want to clarify how rubbish chutes are kept clean and how they’ve controlled the pests.

Before ending his post, he also reminded residents that whenever fumigation is carried out, they should tape up the rubbish chute lids in their home.

Failure to do so, and with no one at home, could lead to the pests silently settling down in your home, he warned.

Town Council Responds

On 13 Nov 2020, the Jurong-Clementi Town Council, which oversees the area the flat is located in, responded to the incident in a statement on Facebook.

The town council clarified that they have put up notices since 22 Oct 2020 to inform residents about the upcoming fumigation on 4 Nov 2020.

It was added that fumigation is carried out once every three months to control the pest population in rubbish chutes.

They’ve also gotten in contact with the affected resident in the video and managed to find out that the woman had not sealed up her rubbish chute as instructed to during the fumigation.

However, they’ll still render all necessary assistance to her.

Moral of the story? Browse through the notice board whenever you’re waiting for the lift at the lift lobby.

In fact, you might want to follow them on their Facebook pages, since they usually highlight important updates in the community like market closures and more.

Comments on the town council’s response also revealed that sealing up your rubbish chute doesn’t mean cockroaches aren’t able to get in regardless:
