Someone Actually Called the Police in Makeshift ‘Getai’ at a Commonwealth HDB Coffeeshop

Is this a getai or a club?

Neither. It’s a coffee shop, and nearby residents were very unhappy at the noise. In fact, someone was annoyed enough to call the police.

Crowds Enjoying Music at Commonwealth Coffee Shop

TikTok user @goldenrooster888 uploaded a bunch of videos that showed a makeshift getai at a coffeeshop, located at Commonwealth Block 31.

Two women could be seen holding microphones and singing, while standing on chairs. It looks like lots of people were standing around them and singing along to Mandarin and Hokkien songs.

A pan around the coffee shop also shows it to be pretty crowded, with tables set up on the nearby grass patches to accommodate the number of diners.

This event happened on the night of 10 October, which was a Monday.

Residents Called Police

According to residents interviewed by Shin Min Daily News, the party started at about 7pm, and lasted all the way till 10pm.

It seems like some residents ended up calling the police, since the police arrived at the coffeeshop at about 9:20pm. After the police left, the volume of the party got lower till it ended at 10pm.

The police have confirmed that they were notified of this party, and that two men were assisting in investigations. The police also revealed that the organiser of this party had actually applied for the relevant license to host this event.

However, they’re suspected of violating the regulations, so they’re currently under investigation.

Coffee Shop’s Anniversary Celebrations

Mr Cai, the manager of the coffee shop, shared that the party was actually the coffee shop’s anniversary celebrations. The coffee shop collaborated with a beer company to give back to its patrons, and it was the beer company that applied for the license.

He further shared that the original intention was just to provide some entertainment for their patrons, not to turn the venue into a rave. Mr Chen said that there were nearly a hundred people spectating and engaging in the celebrations.

“However, it is difficult for us to control the personal behaviour of the diners… we don’t want them to be unhappy.”

Reflecting on this experience, he said that it would be difficult to plan such an event again in the future, which “is a pity”.
