Last year, it was announced that there will be an entry fee of RM20 for foreign-registered vehicles to enter Malaysia.
We could almost hear the heart shattering for the many Singaporeans who drive to JB often for the cheaper food, groceries and whatnot.
In addition, vehicles will also have to apply for a vehicle entry permit (VEP) which is renewable every five years and cost RM10. As of June 2016, about 120,000 vehicles have applied for the VEP.
Known as Road Charge, the entry fee has been on trial since 2 June 2016.
Now, it’s official: according to Channel NewsAsia, the system will be active starting from 1 November 2016, and both Causeway and the Second Link are in the programme.
The fee will not be deducted from your Singapore cashcard, but via Touch n’ Go cards, a Malaysia card commonly used for their tolls. You can get the cards from the Malaysia checkpoints.
Just for the record, the entry fee (known as VEP Fee) for driving a foreign-registered car into Singapore is at SGD$35—well, much higher than the entry fee to Malaysia.
Guess now, we would be going to Malaysia for the good food instead of the “cheap” food.
