Renovation is already stressful as it is – lots of things to be done in a short amount of time, and having your neighbours put up with the noise. But can you imagine it being worse?
No, not the fact that the renovation had to be extended- but worse, they ran off with your money.
Runaway Contractor
A family in Singapore was recently put in a bind when their contractor abruptly vanished and “abandoned” their HDB renovations.
On 16 May, a relative of the family, Ayda Ayn, posted a request for help on Facebook in an effort to support the impacted family.
Earlier this year, on 23 January, the family of eight, which includes three autistic children, hired an interior designer (ID) to refurbish their HDB flat.
The ID had offered them a quote of S$55,000 at the time.
Ayda stated that S$45,000 of the total had already been paid by her cousin’s family. On Saturday (20 May), they were supposed to move into the newly renovated flat.
However, as you might have guessed, the flat was, in reality, nowhere near completion.
In the pictures shared on Facebook, you can see how bare and dusty the whole place is, with little to no furnishing done at all:
Besides the bare flooring, you can see that wires were hanging from the ceiling. There was even concrete debris left and unclean.
What’s more evil, the initial air conditioning and fan units that were already in the flat were stolen by the contractor.
That’s seriously a whole new low. Shame on them.
Overall, the renovations were estimated to be barely 10% to 20% finished.

Repeated Crime
More shockingly, it turns out that other clients, some of whom were deceived by the same contractor five years prior, were also victims.
A netizen shared that her close friend had also been a victim of the same ID.
Talking to MS News, the ID was revealed to be the spouse of her property agent and that her family met him when he went house hunting with them.
In her case, she had paid the ID approximately S$48,000, about 70% of the total fees.
However, much like Ayda’s cousin, the ID went uncontactable as well.
It’s unfortunate that such despicable people exist out there, but for the good-hearted public, Ayda is hoping that members of the public can provide some help to the struggling family.
She provided the contact details on the Facebook post.
Hopefully, the culprit will spend life behind bars real soon.
