Ask people abroad what they know about Singapore, and they’ll probably mention the chewing gum ban, and how clean it is.
Indeed, with the exception of coffeeshop toilets, Singapore is a clean and green island, as it’s often described.
Littering is taken seriously here, and can even lead to a heavy fine.
But when disposing of waste in the right manner is cumbersome, some people would seemingly rather take the easy way out.
And when that happens, once clean and beautiful neighbourhoods are turned into hideous dumps.
MP Taking Action Against Contractors That Throw Bulky Refuse in New BTO Void Deck
Minister of State for Social and Family Development Sun Xueling has warned contractors against dumping refuse at a new Built-to-Order (BTO) flat in Punggol West, threatening to take action if they continue the practice.
Ms Sun brought the issue to light in a Facebook live video last Friday (12 Nov).
Ms Sun, along with the chairman of the Resident’s Network, Adrian, walked netizens around blocks 228 and 229 at Matilda Sundeck, showing how rampant the issue is.
Ms Sun noted that many residents have been moving into the new BTO flat, and consequently, there’s been a lot of renovation works in the area.
She said that contractors have not been dumping their refuse in the proper manner, leading to “renovation debris” all over the ground floor, near the void decks.
Town council workers are coming down every day to clean the mess, she said.
“I hope we can work with our residents here, to talk to our renovation contractors,” Ms Sun said, pointing out that contractors are paid to dispose of the rubbish properly.
Ms Sun and Adrian then walked to the lift lobby of one of the blocks, which was strewn with large, empty wooden boxes, plastic bags, and other pieces of trash.
Ms Sun noted that the town council has been putting up notices about the proper disposal of refuse, but to no avail.
According to Adrian, residents have been asked to instruct their contractors not to dispose of their refuse in this manner, and fortunately, most have done so.
There remains, however, a few who are still dumping renovation waste improperly on the ground floor.
Errant Contractors Could Be Fined
Ms Sun said they are working actively with the town council to identify the culprits who are disposing their refuse in this “inconsiderate” manner, and will take action against them, which could include a fine.
“So, my dear residents, I hope that you can remind the contractors, ” she said.
“I know we all want a beautiful environment and home to live in. I’m looking forward so much to meeting you and welcoming you at Matilda Sundeck.
“Hopefully, we can work together to make Matilda Sundeck a beautiful and wonderful place to live in,” she added.
