If you still live in the 1950s and still think that cosplaying is a waste of time and money, and that it’s a hobby that only nerds would have, think again. In May this year, the cosplay-themed Singapore movie, Young & Fabulous, showed us that cosplayers come from different backgrounds: from that weird outcast student to that hip lawyer.
If that still couldn’t break your stereotypical view of cosplayers, this latest news should. This month, Enako, a 22-year-old popular cosplayer, went on national television and disclose her income. She revealed that she makes well over SGD$12,000 a month.
Now, before you quit your day job and sew some Superman costumes, read on first. How she makes money isn’t just dressing up as a character and taking photos with others—she has to make live appearances with her fans, and gets paid about SGD$4,000 to $5000 per gig. These are usually paid by companies to invite well-known cosplayers over.
Here’s the shocker: in a recent event, she made well over $130,000 in two days…selling merchandises like her photo collections. Over in the US, the cosplayers aren’t doing badly either: in a The Hustle article, a cosplay photographer reveals that a not-so-well-known cosplayer could get up to SGD$400 for a day’s appearance, and the top ones can go up to—wait for it—over SGD$130,000!
But this is for eight people, so one person would get about SGD$16,000. Still a good amount! And in line with Enako, the photographer also says that the main income comes from merchandise sales.
If you add everything together, they’re earning a lot more money than the average Singaporean. This actually works just like how influencers work in Singapore, whereby popular figures are invited for appearances for a fee, minus the fancy costumes. Okay, now, you can throw your resignation letter and buy a sewing machine.
