Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy refused US’ offer to evacuate his country, saying “I need ammunition, not a ride.”
Seems like his display of solidarity had borne fruit, as many Western countries are now supplying Ukraine with weapons. Here are the details.
US Supplying US$350 Million Worth Of Weapons to Ukraine
President of the United States, Joe Biden, had instructed the US State Department to release an additional US$350 million worth of weapons to Ukraine.
This comes after Ukraine’s requests for Javeline anti-tank weapons and Stinger missiles for shooting down aircraft.
The Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said that this third authorisation for weapons shipments to Ukraine was unprecedented. The US had supplied Ukraine with weapons twice in 2021, and already committed more than US$1 billion in security assistance to Ukraine.
The Pentagon has stated that the weapons comprise anti-armour, small arms, body armour and other munitions to help Ukraine’s front-line defenders. They are also sending anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine.
But it’s not just the US. Other Western countries are also sending weapons as well.
The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France All Sending Various Equipment To Help Ukraine
The Dutch government, in a letter to Parliament, said that they will supply 200 Stinger air defence rockets to Ukraine as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, Belgium has pledged 2,000 machine guns and 3,800 tons of fuel.
France has also announced that they’ve decided to send defensive military equipment to Ukraine. They are still considering whether to send offensive equipment.
Most surprisingly, Germany has also approved the delivery of 400 rocket-propelled grenades to Ukraine. This marks a shift in their long-standing policy of not exporting weapons to war zones.
This shift in policy from Germany comes after they faced criticism for not following in the Western allies’ footsteps of sending weapons.

As these countries deliver weapons over to Ukraine, their fight against Russia’s invasion is still ongoing. Russian troops started pushing forward again on Saturday, following a brief pause in the offensive due to rumours of diplomatic talks with Ukraine that never happened.
While countries are still not sending in troops to help Ukraine militarily, at least they’re supporting defence efforts through the supplying of weapons. But as Ukraine gives weapons to untrained civilians who want to fight, only time will tell whether mere weapons are enough to save Ukraine.
