Early December saw not just a flood of Instagram stories or TikTok reels of everyone’s overseas escapades, but it also unfortunately saw a surge in Covid-19 cases in Singapore.
In the first week of December alone, more than 32,000 people were diagnosed with Covid-19, with private clinics, polyclinics and hospitals taking in more patients than what was usually seen in 2020 and 2021.
But in recent weeks, it seems that the storm may finally be clearing up. According to the Ministry of Health’s recent statistics on 28 December, the number of Covid-19 cases in Singapore have been slowly declining in the past week. The fall in cases starkly contrasts the relentless rise in cases that first began on 12 November.
Could this possibly be… a Christmas Miracle?
Hospitalisation Numbers Have Also Seen A Decrease This Week
Last week, 864 patients were hospitalised due to Covid-19 infections, indicating a decrease from 965 patients who were admitted in the week of December 16.
There were also fewer people who were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit last week, with 23 new admissions compared to the previous week’s number of 32.
While it may seem that the bed crunch that most hospitals have been facing may be easing up soon, it is still important that individuals with mild symptoms visit private clinics or polyclinics rather than the hospital.
This would help to ease the triage process in hospitals and reduce waiting times for patients experiencing more severe Covid-19 symptoms.
Ong Ye Kung Urges Singaporeans to Be Prepared for Another “Possible Surge”
While such news may be worthy of celebrating, Singaporeans may need to be a little more hesitant before putting on their party hats for the New Year.
Minister of Health Ong Ye Kung has warned Singaporeans to prepare for a “slight surge” in Covid-19 cases. This is due to the foreseen rise in the volume of interactions from gatherings and parties during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
However, he also believes that Singapore has finally moved past the peak in Covid-19 cases, and that the recent wave is finally under control.
Singapore still remains in DORSCON Green, with no additional safe-distancing measures being put in place for the time being.
