Well, I’ll say we’re off to a good start on Phase 2, seeing as how the number of Covid-19 cases reported today is even lesser than 16 Jun.

Today, Singapore reports 142 new Covid-19 cases, which includes 1 case in the community with no Singaporean/PRs.

This brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in Singapore to 41,615.

The one community case is an inmate on a social visit pass who came into Singapore before border restrictions were put into place.

Foreign workers living in dormitories make up a vast majority of the cases.

Safety Measures At Prison Facility

The one community case has been segregated from the rest of the prison population since his admission on 6 June where he was tested positive for Covid-19.

Previously, when Covid-19 cases happened in Changi Prison, the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) reveals the precautionary measures they had put into place to protect the rest of the inmates:

  • New inmates must be separated from the general population for a period of 14 days upon admission
  • They will have to undergo the swab test before and after their segregation and will be housed in a separate block
  • Visitors are not allowed during this period and the prison service will monitor the situation and gauge when to allow visitors again.
  • Inmates now keep in contact with family members using phone calls or letters
  • Selected face-to-face programmes are also suspended and core activities will be allowed to resume “gradually”.

Migrant Workers Still Not Allowed Out

On 18 Jun, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has announced that during the start of Phase 2, migrant workers are still not allowed out of their dormitories on rest days.

Previously, they had said that migrant workers can leave their dormitories for a “limited time to run errands outside”.

They felt that it was already risky enough that foreign workers might bring the virus back from their workplaces to dormitories which has already been cleared of the virus.

To let them “move beyond the workplace” is riskier than they can accept and it could mean letting months of hard work (by both the foreign workers and stakeholders) go down the drain.

When asked if they have a date in mind to allow foreign workers to leave their dormitories again, they said they hadn’t set a date yet.

Meanwhile, MOH has updated their list of places where Covid-19 patients have been to for at least half an hour.

And Mustafa Centre, a popular destination for migrant workers, has been visited by Covid-19 patients 4 times.

With that said, let us all remember that just because the shops are open doesn’t mean the virus is gone.

While you can go out from time to time to eat and meet with friends, remember that we all need to do our part and stay safe.

As one netizen said, “Dabao 9 times, eat out 1 time.”
