Crazy Rich Asians was, like it or not, the buzzword of 2018 amongst Asian-Americans and Singaporeans when the movie adaptation of the popular book came out.
Starting Constance Wu and Henry Golding, and boosting other Asian stars like Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong and Gemma Chan, it follows the character Rachel Chu who travels to Singapore with her long-time boyfriend Nick for his best friend’s wedding.
It is then when she learns the awful truth: Nick? He’s the scion of an extremely wealthy family and is one of the country’s most eligible bachelor.
Le gasp.
Shenanigans occur, much which, coincidentally enough, happen with beautifully shot clips of some of the best tourist sights in Singapore, sponsored by the Singapore Tourism Board.
The movie, which was a smash hit in 2018, did drop sequel hooks and much has been written about a follow-up based on China Rich Girlfriend (the second book in the series).
However, the fans may have to wait, as the director of the movie has admitted that it might be unlikely to happen.
China Rich Girlfriend? Probably Not
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jon M Chu, the director, has claimed that he would not be getting the stars back in for a sequel until he finds, “a script that’s better and has as much urgency as the first movie”.
“There are a lot of questions about Crazy Rich Asians 2,” said Chu. “I always promised the cast that I will not bring them back unless we get a script that’s better and has as much urgency as the first movie. And I think we just haven’t gotten there yet.
“The first movie, even though people think, ‘It’s like the book, so the second book should fit in’, it’s actually not. There’s a lot of shifting, architecturally, and so it’s not a straight translation.
“And then there are characters that you want to see in a movie that are part of the book. We’ve done some versions and it’s never quite hit.
“The bar is high for all of us to come back to do that, so I’m not going to put the audience through that until we’re ready to do it.”
Crazy Rich Asians, which was based on the 2013 Kevin Kwan book of the same name, was followed by two sequel books: China Rich Girlfriend in 2015 and 2017’s Rich People Problems.
Him not helming the movies or confirming if the movies would even be made is a little sad.
But Chu still has a lot on his plate at the moment.
He is at the helm of the upcoming Wicked movie poised to release on 22 Nov, and is currently still working hard to direct the second movie, slated for release on 21 Nov 2025.
He’s also welcomed his fifth child, Stevie Sky Chu, with Kristen Hodge, his wife, and the mother of his other four children.
