We’re two weeks into the second circuit breaker, better known as Phase 1, and some Singaporeans are starting to get impatient.
Before the phased approached to our reopening was announced, many believed life would immediately return to normal after the circuit breaker.
Then, we were informed that while more businesses would be allowed to reopen and family members would be allowed to visit each other, most of the safe distancing rules in place would remain for the first phase of the safe reopening.
Experts in Singapore have said that the country is on course to move to Phase 2 before the end of the month, but some Singaporeans simply can’t wait that long.
Large Group of Cyclists Spotted in Old Upper Thomson Road
A frustrated resident has taken to Facebook to raise her concerns about a large group of cyclists that was spotted along Old Upper Thomson Road.
In a post on Sunday (14 June), user Antonia Khaw said she came across groups of cyclists at the Casuarina carpark along Old Upper Thomson Road, many of whom were not wearing masks.
As you can see, the cyclists are riding close together in a long row.
While outdoor exercise is permitted, residents are only allowed to exercise alone or with members from the same household.
Khaw criticised the riders for being inconsiderate and warned that it could lead to another surge in Covid-19 cases in the country.
“If this leads to another increase in COVID cases, think how many businesses will be affected if the authorities extend the Circuit Breaker”, she said.
“Be considerate lah… already many of us are facing difficulties – pay cuts, job uncertainties, business closures.”
“Your selfish gatherings don’t help things get better.”

S’pore Cycling Federation Issues Another Reminder
Two months ago, the Singapore Cycling Federation urged cyclists to stay at home and maintain a 20-metre distance from other cyclists if they wanted to ride outdoors.
But now that the cyclists are out riding again, blatantly flouting safe distancing rules, the organisation has issued another reminder on Facebook:
The federation commended the general cycling population for riding solo during this period, but said they have received some complaints about cyclists riding in groups.
They listed several governmental advisories to remind cyclists about the safe distancing rules in place:
1. Cycle outdoors alone in your immediate neighbourhood or with members living in the same household.
2. Cyclists must return home immediately after finishing their rides. No socializing.
3. You can remove your face mask while cycling but must put it on immediately when you have ended your ride.
They also urged cyclists to be more considerate during the Covid-19 outbreak.
“We are all in this effort against Covid19 together. Let’s be responsible. Please help share this post with your friends. Stay safe.”
We’re Almost There
As mentioned before, Phase 2 isn’t too far away, and we’ll be able to visit our friends and have bubble tea then.
But if we’re too impatient and we ignore all the safe distancing rules in place, we could have another spike in coronavirus cases, which, if bad enough, could lead to another circuit breaker.
You shouldn’t just be cautious when the government is telling you to; life will not return to normal for a long time, so we should get ready to this “new normal” way of living until a vaccine is found.
We’ve survived over two months of this. What are another two weeks or so?
