Singapore’s capital punishment of death by hanging has been a topic of controversy since forever.

Some might agree with Singapore’s stance, saying that a strong deterrence is needed to keep the streets clean and safe.

Others felt it was inhumane and against human rights.

But for this little 9-year-old girl, all the death sentence means is that it’ll take her father away from her forever.

A word of warning: this is extremely heartbreaking.

9YO Girl Whose Dad Has a Death Sentence Wrote Touching Letter to President Halimah

A few days ago, Facebook group Transformative Justice Collective published a handwritten letter by a 9-year-old girl to President Halimah Yacob.

Her father is on death row for drug offences and his appeal against his death sentence was rejected in May 2020.

Waited For 7-8 Years

Starting her letter off with “I need my father”, the little girl expressed how he felt hurt every time her father talked about his situation.

Every year on her birthday, she’ll make a wish wishing that her dad would return to her by her next birthday.

And every year, she will be disappointed.

She has been waiting for seven to eight years.

Has Allah Heard Me?

She recounted how, on Mid-Autumn Festival this year, she went to Petir Park with her two friends.

They made a wish and left their paper lanterns behind a bush.

When she returned to look for her lantern, she discovered that hers was missing while her friend’s lantern was still there.

This raised her hopes up, making her wonder if Allah has heard her.

“Please Get Him Out”

Recalling how her father has always shown her care and concern, the little girl pleaded with President Halimah Yacob to release her father from prison.

“Please get him out,” I begged when I cried after reaching home.

Please let my father out, I miss him

I need him

The little girl ended off the handwritten letter with a heartfelt drawing:

Clemency Appeal in Progress

According to MS News, the father is appealing for clemency now.

While the success rate for such a move is low, should his appeal go through successfully, his sentence will be reduced from a death sentence to life imprisonment.

Although life imprisonment means that he won’t be able to “get out” as his daughter wishes, at least he’ll be there for her to visit in the years to come as she grows up.
