We are not sure if all of you sports fan out there have already visited the Decathlon flagship store yet, but since its opening in January, it has already gained the attention of all Singaporeans. It also opens the discussion on how Decathlon will affect the business of sports equipment stores like Royal Sporting House or our famous Queensway Shopping Centre.

Here are 10 reasons why we think that Decathlon can potentially overthrow Queensway SSC.

Cheaper pricing
Queensway SSC is not exactly cheap. You need to hunt for every store in it to find the item you need just in order to compare prices. There are some black sheep stores in Queensway SSC which jack their prices up higher than normal retail stores just in order to let you haggle on the price.

The final price will end up similar to that found in Royal Sporting House. Decathlon is different. There is only ONE store, and you can be assured that the prices are 20% – 40% cheaper than those at other sports retailers.

Bigger than life store area
Opened in Viva Business Park, the Decathlon flagship store in Singapore boasts a whopping 35,000 sq ft: the size of 30 five-room HDB flats. With such a big area, shoppers are able to shop in relative peace without worrying about blocking other shoppers in the narrow aisle in most traditional sports retailers.

Huge Variety of sports apparels and equipment
Decathlon houses more than 95,000 apparels, equipment and footwear for shoppers to choose from. They cover over 50 types of sports and are all sold under the company’s 20 in-house brands. There is the hiking brand Quechua and its team sports brand Kipsta.

Testing zones
Decathlon also has a testing zone within its premises to allow shoppers to test out various equipment before buying them. The team sports testing zone provides goal posts, basketball hoops, and backboards for customers to practise shooting hoops. There are also other testing zones for other products.

Innovative products
Decathlon designs their products in-house and has onboard a dedicated team for research and development. Due to Decathlon’s decision to keep everything in-house, their products are priced cheaper since they cut out the middleman. Their products are functional and, in fact, might just host better functionality than other retailers. For example, the Kipsta Tarmak Magic Jam Basketball contains a liquid solution within its rubber exterior that transforms into foam if the ball is punctured.

Trampoline
The store also houses a trampoline for shoppers to try it on. It provides some fun to children as well and might well ignite sporting talents amongst our younger generation.

Bicycle Repair Shop
There is a bicycle repair shop within the store and will repair any bicycle (regardless of the brand) for a fee. It is handy especially for bikers living around the area.

Scuba-diving equipment
Decathlon actually sells scuba-diving equipment. This is great news for those who loves to scuba-dive because they have a cheaper alternative to go to. Given Decathlon’s innovation, you know that you would not be disappointed. For example, the Tribord Easybreath Mask (costs $85.90) will allow snorkelers to breathe underwater through their nose.

Online pick up point
The store has a designated pick-up point for their online shoppers as well. People who love to shop online no longer need to pay for delivery if they can pop by the store to pick up their purchases.

Long opening hours
Decathlon opens from 9 am to 10 pm daily, and make it easy for busy working adults to shop with them. There you have it. Now, are you ready to head down to Decathlon for a look around to see what you would like to add to your sports apparel, equipment and footwear?
