37-Year-Old Doctor Received Cancer Diagnosis Four Months After Giving Birth; Passes Away On Mother’s Day
When 36-year-old Yao Wenjian (hanyu pinyin) married fellow doctor Liong Yiwan (hanyu pinyin) in 2016, he didn’t expect to lose his wife to cancer one day.
But unfortunately, we don’t always get what we want in life.
According to Shin Min Daily News, Liong Yiwan is a 37-year-old doctor who grew up in Penang, Malaysia. One decade ago, she came to Singapore to work as a doctor after finishing her medical degree in the UK. Starting at a hospital, Ms Liong eventually became a general practitioner at StarMed Specialist Centre.
We know for sure that any Asian parent would be proud of this.
However, everything was about to change when 2021 rolled around.
Four months after giving birth to her currently two-year-old son, Ms Liong was unfortunately diagnosed with breast cancer.
Initially, when she discovered a lump on her chest, she assumed it was a childbirth-related issue and didn’t think too much of it. Only when the 37-year-old developed pain in her bones, muscle soreness and a rash did she finally realise something was off.
And her hunch was correct—she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer and a rare disease called dermatomyositis, which causes rashes and muscle inflammation.

“The more, the merrier” doesn’t always hold water.
Husband and Friend Shave Heads in Solidarity With Doctor
Her diagnosis devastated her family members. However, Ms Liong kept her chin up and quickly started heading for treatments, including surgery and chemotherapy.
And as most of us should have learnt from TV dramas, chemotherapy usually causes hair loss. As such, the 37-year-old decided to take things into her own hands and shave her head first.
Ms Liong even caught COVID-19 twice during her battle against cancer but never complained.
Talk about a girl boss.

The 37-year-old doctor also created an Instagram account to detail her battle against cancer and urge others to detect ailments early and seek treatment immediately.
Regardless, the sweetest thing was this: her husband and a good friend also shaved their heads to support Ms Liong’s battle against cancer.
Mr Yao also told Shin Min Daily News that when their son saw her mother bald, he said she still looked beautiful.
You won’t need sugar in your kopi for a while because of how sweet this is.

Unfortunately, Ms Liong’s condition worsened in April 2022, and her cancer progressed to the fourth stage. Thus, the 37-year-old doctor’s family went on a trip to Japan late last year to use what time they had left together.

And time was about to show that the time they had left was very little.
Doctor Returned to Malaysia Before Passing
On Saturday (13 May), Ms Liong requested her 69-year-old mother, Qiu Yifeng (hanyu pinyin), to bring her back to Malaysia.
And bring her back to Malaysia, she did.
According to Shin Min Daily News, after Ms Liong’s diagnosis, Mdm Qiu and her husband would take turns travelling between Malaysia and Singapore to visit and care for their daughter in the hospital. The 37-year-old doctor was the pair’s only child.
On Mother’s Day (14 May), after nearly a two-year battle with cancer, Ms Liong passed on in Malaysia, leaving her husband, two sons aged two and six respectively, and her elderly parents behind.
The 37-year-old’s wake was held at Lengkong Lima, and her funeral was held on Thursday (18 May).

May she rest in peace.
