The relationship between maids and the people in the households they work in can be tricky to navigate for sure, but there are two things that I’m sure both the worker and the employer can agree on.
One, the employer shouldn’t mistreat their maids and two, the maid shouldn’t steal from her employers.
It’s really that simple.
Domestic Worker Hid Stolen Gold Ornament in a Sanitary Pad & Stole Various Other Valuables
42-year-old Indonesian maid, Tirah Bt Kastim Marsiah, started working in the household she was assigned to since 28 January 2021.
However, when her employer checked his jewellery collection on 1 and 2 May 2021, he quickly noticed that his pieces of jewellery, cash and other items are missing.
Some of the pieces of jewellery are actual antiques.
He questioned the maid and subsequently called the cops.
Based on the police’s investigations, the maid revealed that she stole jade pendants, jade bracelets, gold chains, commemorative gold coins, and a receipt that have a total worth of around S$9,214 on 13 March 2021.
She wrapped the stolen goods in a piece of cloth and hid the stuff in a handbag in the backyard.
Who leaves handbags in backyards though?
She also stole a gold ornament that she found in a box while cleaning that’s worth S$455.
Wrapping the item in a sanitary pad, she then hid it in her clothes.
Although not all stolen pieces of jewellery were recovered as claimed by the employer, the police did manage to retrieve the one she hid in the pad.
It’s likely that she had already pawned off many of the other items that couldn’t be found.
Funny that she claimed she has returned all stolen goods to her employer…
The maid was promptly arrested and sentenced by the judge to 20 weeks in jail.
She was charged with violating Article 381 of the Criminal Code for stealing her employer’s valuables.
Good Help is Truly Hard to Find
As revealed to the reporter from Shin Min Daily (新明日报), the male employer of the maid said that this is the first time he encountered a maid who steals from her employers throughout his 25 years of hiring maids.
He explained that he thought he had hit the jackpot with the domestic worker since she appeared to be very polite, is diligent, and has a great work attitude.
He also added that they used to have two maids, but now, they are left with only one.
They do not plan to hire another maid in the meantime.
Maid Claims That Employer Still Owe Her S$80
In a turn of events, the maid accused her employer of owing her S$80 in salary during her court hearing.
The judge explained that this accusation has nothing to do with the current case at hand.
However, the judge did ask the prosecution to help the maid contact the employer to clear up the matter.
That’s truly nit-picking at its finest!
Plus, I don’t suppose she’s going to pay her employer back for all the pieces of jewellery that she has pawned off?
