A Wise Old Man once said:
“Every good thing’ll have to come to an end eventually.”
And I can’t help but agree with him-
“Like a relationship’s honeymoon period.”
… Excuse me, I’m talking here–
“Or the unlicensed hawker stalls I used to dine at.”
Hey, shut up old man-
“Even Kinokuniya at Liang Court’s no different, despite it being the only bookstore I frequent.”
Are you done- wait, Kinokuniya at Liang Court’s closing-
“Truly, life’s a game changer in its own right.”
And your face is about to change if you don’t shut up.
“And right on to you, atta boy!”
Closure after 36 years of operations
The introductory paragraph might’ve been one spun with loads of bullcock in mind, but the main gist is real:
Kinokuniya at Liang Court’ll be closing soon, and its last day of operations will be on 21 April, 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
And in light of its impending closure, the bookstore will be leaving a parting gift to members:
Privilege card members will be granted a 20 per cent discount storewide from 12 April to 21 April, while non-privilege card members will be entitled to a 10 per cent discount.

Truly, a legendary bookstore in its own right.
But… why the closure?
If you’re wondering about that with a fervent ferocity, here’s why. According to Kinokuniya Singapore, the decision was made in an effort to “consolidate and channel” their finite resources, so as to achieve “better deployment” amongst the remainder of their business units.
The other three stores, located at Takashimaya, JEM and Bugis Junction, will continue to operate as per usual.
But what makes Kinokuniya at Liang Court so special?
I mean; one could argue:

“Well, at least I’ll have three other outlets to satiate all my bookish needs. Takashimaya isn’t that far from Liang Court anyway, and the former’s the main store!”
Well, granted, Liang Court is indeed not that far from the main store at Takashimaya, and it’s smaller to boot. However, as lovers of Japanese culture would surely attest to, the Liang Court outlet offers a significantly diverse range of Japanese books, comics, magazines, novels and light novels, making it a popular haunt for otakus and Japanese connoisseurs alike.
Additionally, the outlet boasts a bargain alley of sorts, where designated books and magazines are retailed for comparatively cheaper prices.
And being based at Liang Court, the branch offers a serene and peaceful shopping experience that might not be found in other outlets (namely because they’re located at prominent shopping spots).
Though, according to one of my colleagues, parking there requires the skill of a level-99 driver.
A brief history
For those unaware, Kinokuniya at Liang Court, the first Kinokuniya outlet in Singapore, has had a grandiose run during its tenure, having first opened their doors to the public in December 1983.

In fact, this year, 2019, would’ve marked the branch’s 36th anniversary since their opening.
Initially perceived as a bookstore serving the needs of Japanese expats, Kinokuniya has since branched out into a haven for all book lovers.
The bookstore chain would go on to establish three other outlets, as mentioned above.
And so… what’re you waiting for?
If you’re an avid fan of the Liang Court exclusive branch, or just fancy yourself some hefty discounts, you know what to do.
