On 14 Nov, a duck rice hawker at Geylang Bahru Market was fined S$300 for taking off his mask.
Normally, this just sounds like another case in fine city but what caused the uproar amongst netizens is this hawker did not take off his mask for no reason.
He took off his mask to taste his own sauce, and it was only for 10 seconds.
Hawker Reportedly Fined by SDA After Pulling Down Mask for 10 Seconds to Taste Sauce
According to Zaobao, before his offence, his wife was attending to the customers while he was chopping duck meat. Queuing in front of the hawker were over 20 customers waiting to be fed.
As his sauce was running out, the hawker, Wang Rongfu, decided to taste his new batch of sauce before serving it to the customers. That sauce tasting action took about 10 seconds before a pair of safe distancing ambassadors showed up.
The pair asked for his personal particulars before they were joined by three more colleagues.
Their colleagues told Mr Wang that he had violated the regulations for not wearing a mask. If he did not cooperate, the ambassadors will call the police.
Worried about the customers queuing and how it may affect his business, Mr Wang did not have time to take his own stand. Instead, he obliged and hoped to be able to clarify the matter later.

Fined $300
The day after the incident, Mr Wang tried to contact the authorities to explain himself but they said that the ambassadors saw him not wearing masks so it was just a routine matter.
Mr Wang was shocked when he received a S$300 fine for he expected a warning instead.
The fine will also have to be paid off before 16 Dec.
Mr Wang mentioned that throughout his 30 years in business, his hygiene standard has always been top-notch. He even wore a hairnet to bring his stall’s hygiene up another level.
He felt that this was unreasonable and question if his stall was considered a public space.
Warnings
It also turned out that it wasn’t his first brush with the safe distancing ambassadors.
A week ago, the safe distancing ambassadors had asked the couple to don their masks in the right manner when they were preparing food.
On the day of the incident, the safe distancing ambassadors asked them to wear their mask properly again when Mrs Wang’s mask slipped under her nose.
However, Mr Wang insisted that her mask covered both her mouth and nose.
Mr Wang also mentioned this batch of safe distancing officers have been repeatedly patrolling the area in the past month and therefore questioned if they were going overboard.
Other Vendors
Apparently, Mr Wang was not the only vendor who had a run-in with the safe distancing ambassadors. Another vendor also had his particular taken down as well.
This time, it was because he was at his stall eating and chatting with friends.
