Can also be used as an assault weapon of sorts.

Migrant Worker Jailed for 8 Weeks After Swinging a 4kg Dumbbell at Victim Over Cooking Roster

According to The New PaperBillah Masum, 38, from Bangladesh, has been charged for assault.

He was subsequently sentenced to eight weeks’ imprisonment.

Apparently, the case occurred at around 11:00 a.m. on 31 August, in a dormitory in Bukit Batok.

According to the report, Billah was exercising in the living room when he accused the victim of not cooking for the past few days.

An argument then broke out between the both of them.

During this time, Billah reportedly hit the victim with a 4kg dumbbell.

Lightweight In Nature, Heavy In Impact

As a result of the assault, the victim is reported to have sustained a 5cm gash to his head.

He was subsequently brought to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, where he was treated and discharged on the same day.

During the sentencing, District Judge Marvin Bay stated that the victim was fortunate to have sustained only light injuries.

Like, seriously. I can’t even imagine a dumbbell dropping on my toes.

He then handed an eight-week jail sentence to Billah.

The term was backdated to 2 September – the day Billah was first remanded.

For voluntarily causing hurt, Billah could have faced a prison term of up to three years, a fine of up to $5,000, or both.

Previous Instances

Though rare, cases of assault by dumbbell are not exactly non-existent.

In 2019, a man reportedly used a 10kg dumbbell to assault his own girlfriend.

He was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

And in the same year, another man had assaulted someone with a dumbbell repeatedly, after the latter allegedly made passing comments in regards to the former’s relative.

The death of the assailant’s father also contributed to his behaviour.

He was sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment.

And back in 2011, a Fargo man had hit an 82-year-old woman in the head with a dumbbell.

The attack reportedly left her head “gashed open”.

He was sentenced to 62 months in prison.
