If you’d have remembered, about four months ago, durian prices went so low, some sellers were giving them out.
Literally.
Back then, a typical Mao Shan Wang durian was selling at $12-15 per kg, compared to the usual price of $28 to $35 per kg.
Durian feasts were plentiful all over Singapore, and heck, even McDonald’s introduced the D24 Durian McFlurry.
Back then, it was due to an oversupply of durians from Malaysia because of the hot weather.
Slowly, but surely, prices bounced back to normal, and McDonald’s is now selling Hershey’s McFlurry instead.
However, what goes up must come down, and down they are now.
Durian Prices Drop Again
According to reports, durian prices have dropped drastically again.
It’s reported that King Fruits Durian, a durian vendor at Havelock Road, is selling Mao Shan Wang durians at $10 a piece.
Agak-agak-ly, the prices of Mao Shan Wang have dropped to about $16 to $20 per kg.
Not as low as what it used to be, but still low.
The main reason for this drop?
Basic supply and demand.
Unlike the drop in July, whereby the supply increased, the recent drop is due to the decrease in demand. Vendors claimed that due to the holiday season, people are going overseas and therefore, less people are buying durians.
Also, as it’s the end of the year, people are spending more on other stuff instead of durians—stuff like new clothes, textbooks for kids and Christmas gifts.
There’s also a little spike in supply as it’s the Mao Shan Wang season.
Prices Expected to Continue Dropping
It’s only November, and demands are already dropping. Vendors are therefore expecting the drop to persist.
Some vendors have expected the drop to go all the way down to $12 per kg, which is the price that led to “free durians” a few months back.
Guess this could only mean one thing: we can have our durian party again soon without having to break the bank.
Though I’m sure Durian McFlurry won’t be back #justguessing
