What differentiates us, humans, from savage beasts is not merely the ability to fashion tools and use technology. It is our common humanity and all which it entails.
If you run over someone, you are expected to help them and dial for an ambulance right away. Not because you would want to be arrested, but because you can potentially save their lives.
Unfortunately in China, that opportunity was presented three times, to different people, and all of them chose to forsake their humanity and the life of the victim.
Inhuman
An elderly man in Guangxi, China, was hit multiple times by vehicles and unfortunately lost his life.
The elderly man was walking along the road, weak and feeble with his walking stick.
He was then first run over by a motorcycle from behind him. Despite falling off his motorcycle, the motorcyclist was not injured, but the elderly man clearly was. He was incapacitated, unable to stand or move off, but still breathing.
This motorcyclist, trying to be a ‘nice guy’, dragged the old man’s body to the side, but still left his torso on the road.
The motorcyclist then went back on to his motorcycle and sped off, as if nothing had happened.
Comments in the original Weibo post said that the motorcyclist could have been blinded by the high-beam lights of an oncoming car, which resulted in him not being able to see the elderly man temporarily and causing the accident.
While that may have been true, it doesn’t justify the fact that he left him there to fend for himself.
As the old man was lying there, unable to move due to injury, it was almost inevitable that he would be run over again, by a second motorcyclist.
The second motorcyclist ran over his head nonchalantly. He did not even stop at all to check on the elderly man and simply rode off.
The elderly man was still alive. As he tried with great difficulty to sit back up, he was killed by a car that ran over him without hesitation.
…
No, seriously. What in the world?
Disgustingly Selfish
You can view the video here.
China has had a morality deficit for some time.
This is not the first case of such abhorrent selfishness and disregard for human life.
A viral video of toddler Yueyue, who was run over twice by vans, circulated online. Not simply because the drivers had hit-and-run, but also because there were at least 18Â people who ignored the dying child and carried on with their grocery shopping.
This is horrifying.
Hopefully, as time goes by, humans can learn to be humans, and care for one another even a little bit.
