Elderly Woman Confess To Ordering Three Foreign Domestic Workers To Slap & Pour Water On Each Other

What do you do when your employees don’t perform to your satisfaction?

Do you reprimand them or do you take on a more positive approach and remind them of all the things they’re doing right before sneakily asking them to improve on other things?

This elderly lady definitely took on a less positive approach.

Elderly Woman Orders Three Foreign Domestic Workers To Slap & Pour Water On Each Other

A grandmother, Kan Choi Yit, 62, was so upset that her three domestic workers weren’t completing their tasks as well as she wanted them to that she thought of an inventive punishment.

The thing was, she wasn’t carrying out the punishments herself.

She asked them to slap each other on the face as punishment but that wasn’t all. She also got them to pour water over each other until they were soaking wet.

On Thursday Kan Choi Yit, 62, pleaded guilty to two charges of getting her domestic workers to voluntarily cause hurt to each other, and another charge of instigating them to intentionally use force to annoy each other.

Kan will be sentenced on 31 March.

Offences Were Discovered When MOM Conducted Investigation For Another Incident

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Joseph Gwee sought a jail term of two months and one week.

According to him, the offences were only discovered on 1 October 2018 during an investigation by a Ministry of Manpower (MOM) officer over a separate incident.

However, more information regarding the incident was not revealed.

Two Of The Helpers Were Employed Directly By Kan

Two of the domestic workers were employed directly by Kan, Filipino Annabel Timbol Reyes, aged 26, and Indonesian Ratna Lestari, 25.

A third woman, Filipino Ms Planta Renalyn Manaday, 32 was also involved but was employed by Kan’s daughter-in-law.

However, she would spend Sunday to Friday at Kan’s house with her employer.

Their ‘Crimes’

So you must be wondering what they could’ve possibly done to deserve such treatment. The first three incidents occurred on 20 August 2018.

Ms Reyes was preparing food for Kan’s grandchildren. Instead of using a measuring cup to measure how much rice should be used, she poured the rice grains directly into the rice cooker.

Kan then inspected the rice and felt that there was too much rice and asked both Ms Reyes and Ms Ratna why this was so.

Ms Ratna then admitted that she hadn’t taught Ms Reyes to use the measuring cup.

Kan then got angry as the rice was wasted, so she told Ms Reyes to slap Ms Ratna on the face 10 times.

The helper agreed because she was scared of disobeying Kan.

In another incident, Ms Manday and Ms Ratna were washing the family car. The gate was open and thus the family dog ran out.

Kan heard the commotion and came outside. She scolded them for washing the car so late and told Ms Manaday to slap Ms Ratna twice.

The third incident occurred in September and the court heard that Kan wanted to drink hot water but none was available because the flasks hadn’t been refilled which angered her.

She then scolded all the three helpers and asked them what would be a suitable punishment.

When they didn’t reply she told them to pour room temperature water on each other. They then filled up a cooking pot and poured water over each other.

No Right To Meet Out Physical Punishment

Kan’s defence lawyer asked for a lighter sentence and said that the domestic workers had never filed a complaint with the Ministry of Manpower about how they were treated.

But DPP Gwee said that as domestic workers, they were in a vulnerable position.

He said, “There may have been many reasons for them not to report, whether it is the fact that they already paid large sums (of money) to their agents to come here and work or because they want to earn more money for their families.”

At the end of the day, Kan had no right to meet out physical punishment despite her anger or frustration.
