If you are a fan of superhero movies, such as movies from Marvel, you are going to want to watch their latest movie for it is said to achieved many firsts and even has around 10 main characters in it.
Yeah, paying one movie ticket to watch 10 superheroes. Totally worth it.
Everything You Need to Know About Eternals, The Latest Marvel Movie That’s M18
Normally, in movies, directors like to revolve the plot around one to two main characters however, this time Marvel is pushing the boundaries with around 10 main characters.
Aside from that, four villains and a love quadrangle were featured too.
But the main question you must be asking now is, why did Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) classify this movie to be M18?
Well, that’s where we are here to debunk that for you. Do note that this article contains some spoilers, so if you don’t want to be spoilt, just watch their trailer here:
Why Is It Rated M18?
According to IMDA, there are a few reasons why the movie is classified M18 with the advisory “Some Mature Content”:
- Homosexual references and depictions
- Sexual Intimacy
- Violence
Homosexual References and Depictions
One of the homosexual references includes two same-gender partners embracing and sharing lips while the other shows a same-gender family unit that has a child.
This was classified under M18 Classification guidelines for that tier allows “non-explicit depictions of mild sexual activity or acts of intimacy between persons of the same gender”.
This is the first same-gender kiss that features the main character in a major family-oriented film from Walt Disney Studios.
However, unless you live in a cave, you’d probably know that almost all Hollywood dramas and movies have same-gender couples.
Sexual Intimacy
Many things happened in the Marvel universe, people travel through time and space, others coming back from the “dead”, but never have Marvel had an on-screen sex scene until now.
According to IMDA, this first on-screen sex scene will focus on a man and woman’s upper bodies. No names were dropped so you get to still be surprised when it happens.
Violence
As with every Marvel movie, there will be some fighting. And unlike in cartoons, superheroes or humans do not bleed candy.
Thus, some of the injuries may be considered to be too gore for younger audiences. Injuries like slashing or stabbing with blood spurts may be seen in the movie.
However, these injuries are not the focal point so the camera moves on quickly without lingering on the details.
Diverse Cast
M18 classification aside, Eternals also showcases the first deaf and South Asian superheroes. Stars and actors from the United States, Britain, Ireland, South Korea, Mexico and India were featured in this film.
Gemma Chan, a British-Asian actress and model, played Sersi in the movie, hopes how the movie’s diverse cast can soon become the industry norm. Angelina Jolie, who played Thena in the movie, has a similar stance.
