The Salted Egg Yolk craze has been around for some time, and I’m sure many of us might already be getting tired of it. Traditionally, there were salted egg buns (liu sha bao) and crab, then came salted egg yolk croissants, and now, we have…salted egg yolk fish and chips?
Gone are the days when salted egg dishes were mostly enjoyed at a loud and noisy hawker centre, fresh from the kitchen of a zi char stall. Now, you can get them in places like Fish & Co, with comfortable soft seats and air-conditioning, without worrying about smelling like grease and fumes afterwards.
That’s right, Fish & Co recently rolled out a new item on their menu, the ‘Premium Fish and Chips’, described as: ‘Golden salted egg core buried within the flaky fresh fish meat, coated with our famed batter. To top it off, a generous drizzle of rich salted egg sauce!’ Okay, you probably have to admit that it sounds pretty good actually, but it costs a whopping $18.95.

Almost nineteen dollars for a plate of fish and chips! Is salted egg sauce actually that expensive, or are they just trying to profit off a (slowly dying) trend? My guess would be the latter, but hey that’s how it is in the world of business, right?

However, despite the declining hype and the price tag, the reviews for the dish seem promising and I guess they do get bonus points for actually stuffing the fish with salted egg instead of merely drizzling the sauce outside, much like many other food places and calling it a premium item.
The price is still a debate point, though since I haven’t tried it personally but I would definitely pay if it is so good that it feels like an out-of-body experience. I mean, who would say no to good food?
If the fish and chips aren’t your thing, they also came out with battered and fried prawns coated in the same indulgent sauce for a lower price of $8.95, but intelligent guesses would know that they won’t give you much. But the picture in the promotional poster shows 5 of them, which is admittedly pretty decent.
So yes, if you’re someone who’s really into the salted egg yolk craze, why not give this fish and chips from Fish & Co a go and tell us how it went? Hope it doesn’t end up a disappointment!
