How many of you have sat down at a resplendent bar and admired our nation’s picturesque skyline?
We always have new buildings and skyscrapers popping out—our skyline is always ever-changing.
But who are the people behind these developments?
I am referring to the gritty part—the process of constructing the buildings from scratch.
They are the unsung heroes of our nation—migrant workers.
Working in less than favourable conditions, amidst the merciless heat and humidity, these guys are the backbone of our nation.
Whenever I hear about an unfortunate death of a migrant worker—it never fails to tug at my heartstrings.
Yesterday (Dec 18), while everyone is dreading the start of a week, a 51-year-old construction worker fell to his death from the 10th floor of a construction site in Tampines, Channel NewsAsia reported.
What happened
The SPF mentioned that they were alerted to the incident along Tampines Avenue 10 at about 11:08 A.M.
The victim was declared dead by paramedics at the scene.
MOM mentioned that the worker was performing formwork on the 10th floor of a building when he fell and landed on the fourth floor.
Channel NewsAsia understands the worker was a Chinese national.
The construction site has stopped all work as the occupier of the site, China Jingye Engineering Corporation Limited has been issued a full stop work order.
A spokesman for the said company confirmed that the incident happened at the company’s worksite but was unable to comment further as investigations are ongoing.
The spokesman said: “We are extending our fullest support to the authorities on it”.
“We are also doing our best to assist family members of the deceased to arrive in Singapore as soon as possible and help them cope with the loss of their loved one,” the spokesperson added.
Thoughts
I can only imagine the family’s devastation and it’s too early to comment on anything since the investigations are ongoing.
The next time, you come across a migrant worker, think of the hardship they have been through and give them a nod of recognition.
Or, you know, just stop looking at them like they’re suspicious people.
