Good news, guys (sorry girls)! As recognition and celebration of NS50, servicemen past and present will receive an NS50 recognition package of S$100 in vouchers from the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) this year.
To recognize every Singaporean Son’s efforts and contributions to Singapore’s defence, the Government is giving out $100 in vouchers. I’d probably say something sarcastic here, but this is free money we’re talking about. It’s very difficult to get upset over receiving a free gift.
As reported, men who have completed National Service (NS), those serving as of 1 Jan 2017, and those who enlist in the 2017 batch are eligible for this package.
At first glance, this sentence is quite hard to unpack. It literally just means every NSman and NSF up to 2017, including new enlistees this year, is eligible. Rather unnecessarily complicated wording, really.
In addition to the free cash vouchers, those who are serving or have served Operationally Ready National Service (ORNS) will also get a free year of membership for SAFRA or Home TeamNS.
And if you’re not aware, a SAFRA membership, while it worths less, has lots of benefits that might just blow your mind away. Just check this out, and this is just the top of the iceberg.
Unfortunately, Singaporeans remain adept at complaining, even if we’re literally being given free money.
Many have expressed their concerns about how this is merely a very small token for the years of service and dedication, and others have mentioned how this voucher cheapens their contributions. The fact that this package is in the form of a voucher instead of a cash voucher or just simply cash, has irked many as well.
Which does make sense, considering this S$100 voucher can only be used at select outlets, and is probably not going to be a substitute for actual money.
I suppose the choice is between no money at all, or a highly restrictive voucher. Thanks, MINDEF!
