Who runs the world? GIRLS. Beyonce said it, and we couldn’t agree more on this International Women’s Day.
Falling on the 8th of March, here is everything you need to know about this significant event that has changed women’s lives.
History of International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is defined as a day to “celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women” and a “call to action for accelerating gender parity.” Celebrated all throughout the world, it mirrors how far women have progressed from then till now.
According to UN Women, International Women’s Day originated in the dawn of the 20th century due to diverse labour movements across North America and Europe. The intentions were inherently political. Organisers were members of the Socialist Party of America, and they were mainly concerned with women’s rights and suffrage.
What It is Now
It’s not a public holiday (well, of course, if not I won’t be here), but there’re apparently various themes to celebrate this day, and they’re different every year.
But of course, let’s look at the lighter side of this event: several businesses in Singapore are offering deals on this day (or the entire month), so you might want to check out our deals page.
And…on an even lighter note, some people like to call this day 三八女人节, which could connote something that women won’t want to associate with. To clear the air once and for all, it’s technically known as 国际妇女节.
