An unfortunate event happened last Saturday (16 Sep) when a man died at Hong Kong’s Ocean Park.
According to news reports, the man, 21-year-old Mr Cheung, was at the park for an annual staff event organised by his company, Swire Group.
He was at the Halloween-themed attraction, Buried Alive, where guests are required to take a slide to enter the haunted house.
5 minutes after entering the attraction, he was found unconscious by staff and sent to the hospital.
Park medics administered first aid immediately and an ambulance was called. Unfortunately, he died at Ruttonjee Hospital.
The police were notified at 2.06 pm.
Man accidentally ended up in backstage area
By accident, he found his way into the backstage area where staff carries out maintenance work for the attraction.
The park maintained that the man did not die from a “mechanical failure”, but was hit by moving parts of the slide instead.
The 4.5m-long and 2.5m-high slide was approved on Thursday by external inspectors for operations.
Attraction suspended until after further notice.
For now, operations for the attraction is suspended so that the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department is can carry out investigations.
Priscilla Leung, the chairwoman of the Legislative Council’s justice and legal services panel, said that the park has more to answer for than just brushing it off as “a mistake”.
The attraction will not be opened until the suspension notice is lifted.
Swire Group & Ocean Park “offer their condolences”

The company offers its condolences to the family members of Mr Cheung.
Ocean Park CEO, Mr Matthias Li Sing Chung, also pledged that they will do all they can for the family members.
