I‘ll try to live up to expectations with the word “Everything”.
Well, I might miss out on certain things so here are the key essential points you need to know about the presidential election this year.
28 August – Writ of Election issued
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has issued the writ of election a while back.
13 September – Nomination Day
The Presidential Elections Committee will screen all presidential candidates and inform them of their decision by 12 September.
The designated venue will be at the People’s Association headquarters at 9 King George’s Avenue.
If there is only one eligible candidate, he or she will be declared the President on 13 September.
If not… there will be a poll. However, hold your horses.
22 September – Cooling Day
We will have this first. This is the day before the polling day.
Qualified candidates will be given permission to campaign up to 21 September. Thereafter, I quote, “campaigning is disallowed and election advertising must not be published or displayed.”
Rationale: To allow voters to “reflect rationally on various issues raised at an election before going to the polls.”
And before you say anything, they’re totally serious about this. Quite a few candidates got into hot soup in the previous election, if you remember.
23 September – Polling Day
If there is more than one candidate for the position, Singaporeans will cast their vote for their eighth President on this very day. Mark the date.
Polling Day will be declared a public holiday. But, it doesn’t affect us because… check your calendars.
I feel you. Unless you work on Saturdays, then good for you!
Anyhow, the ultimate victor will be the second Malay president in Singapore’s history and the first to be chosen in a presidential election reserved for candidates of a specific community.
So there you have it, what’s important for the presidential election 2017 timeline as we await the crowning moment of glory.

Oh, I forgot to add one important point!
For those of you who are experienced in polling, you know you’ll have to stand in line, register manually with polling officials before you can go off to cast your vote.
This election, you’ll be doing the same thing, except for three districts.
For residents in Chua Chu Kang GRC, Tanjong Pagar GRC and Yuhua SMC, you will get to use the all-new electronic registration system when you register yourself at the voting centre.
This will help to shorten the voting process according to the Elections Department. Lucky you.
