Everyone loves carbs and it comes in all shapes and sizes—bread, pasta, fries, whipped potato and the ubiquitous rice which is a staple in our household.
But how much will you pay for a sack of rice?
There are many variations, from brown to white, so prices can shoot up to maybe at most $10.
What if I told you there is a new rice in the market next month and it will set you back over $100?
No, it’s not made of gold.
The Japanese brand Kinmemai will be launching the world’s most expensive rice in Singapore next month.
It is the most expensive rice and I am not making it up.
According to Channel NewsAsia, the premium product was listed in last year’s Guinness World Records as the world’ most expensive rice, costing at $149 per kilo.
Singapore will be the first country to receive this “atas” rice outside of Japan.
For the sake of comparison, let’s take a look at the rice we commoners have.
5 kg of Royal Umbrella Fragrant Rice is at $15.80, so that means 1 kg is about $3.16.
Okay, moving on.
Why is it so expensive?
Does it contain edible gold—even then, the price isn’t justifiable.
The blend consists of five varieties of award-winning grain from various regions of Japan—Gunma, Gifu, Kumamoto, Nagano, and Niigata.
Their website also claims that they have a patented rice polishing technology by using innovative buffing machinery from Toyo Rice Corp. This ensures that they only remove the indigestible wax layer of the rice grain while retaining the nutritious parts of the rice.
Where to get it
You’re able to try it for yourself as it will be available from Nov 1 on their site-www.kinmemai.com—at $155 for a box of six 140 grams sachets.
If you think it is extortionate, their brown and white rice variation is much cheaper. The former costs $9.80 while the latter costs 9.40.
Before splurging on their newest product next month, maybe you can try out their cheaper options and see if it worth the hype.
Apparently, their white rice is far more superior than your typical white rice. It contains seven times more vitamin B1 and six times more LPS (a natural immune system booster) and 1.8 time more dietary fibre than the conventional white rice. It also contains 10% less calories.
Sounds like it is some kind of miracle rice. The website also mentioned that their white rice has a slightly buttery and nutty taste with a creamy texture.
Ok, the thought of it does sound good. I will definitely try out their brown and white rice. But first, can I buy just one cup? Pretty please?
