Facebook Launching New Dating Service For Users: 6 Topics S’poreans Talked About Today (2 May)

If we look at Facebook as a whole, they’re like the Jack of all trades.

From games to online marketplace and even VR, you’d have thought there’s nothing they do that can surprise you anymore.

Until you hear about this.

Facebook Gets Into The Dating Game, Launches Dating Service That’s Not For Hookups

Forget Tinder or Paktor, Facebook now wants you to be on their platform for your happily ever after.

Today, it was reported that Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Facebook’s new dating service at the annual Facebook developers conference.

He said that the service is meant for people to find a “real, long-term partner”, and not for hookups.

Users will be able to separate their “dating profile” from their usual circle of Facebook friends.

Matches between individuals will be suggested based on:

  • Mutual interests
  • Dating preferences
  • Mutual acquaintances

However, it isn’t known if the service is free to use.

In the same conference, he also emphasised Facebook’s commitment to users’ privacy. Last month, Facebook admitted that up to 87 million of users in the platform had their information hijacked.

They promised that this won’t happen again.

Guess there’s hope for people who are #ForeverAlone, huh?

Because say what you want about Facebook, they do have a track record of making things happen for their users.

Facebook Will Soon Allow Users to Clear Browsing History

In case you didn’t know, Facebook knows a lot about you. In fact, maybe even more than you.

Your browsing history, which is critical in building your profile (e.g. if you search for David Beckham often or look at David Beckham’s profile regularly, Facebook knows you’re David Beckham’s fann), is often used by Internet companies to push more more relevant ads to you.

You see, the more relevant the ads, the more you’ll click, and the more Internet companies earn as they learn per click.

Now, Facebook is working on an update that allows you to clear your browsing history in Facebook. It’s like clearing cookies in your computer, so ads that appear might be less relevant – but at least your privacy is completely under control.

It might take a few months before this update is built, so in the meantime, closet David Beckham fans will still see David Beckham ads (not sure why Beckham would want to advertise, but anyways).

New PMD Law Will Put Reckless Riders in Jail If Convicted

Today is a day worth celebrating. Feel free to pull out that special Sakura coke for a special drink.

Why? Because a new law on Personal Mobility Devices (PMD) is coming into effect. And it’ll (probably) harshly punish reckless riders on the streets.

On 1 May, LTA made a surprise announcement about their new regulations on bicycles, PMDs and Powered Assisted Bicycles (PABs) with immediate effect.

Here’s the TL; DR of the new regulations

Where can users of PMDs and PABs ride

  • PABs are not allowed on footpaths
  • E-Scooters can be ridden on the roads
  • Footpaths speed limit is 15kmph and 25kmph on park connectors and shared paths

If found breaking the regulations, first-time offenders can be fined up to $1,000, jailed up to 3 months, or both.

Repeat offenders will find their fine and jail term doubled.

Design of Devices

  • Devices cannot be more than 20kg and have speeds capped at 25kmph

If found to own illegal devices, you can be fined up to $5,000, jailed up to three months, or both.

For hit-and-run incidents

  • If you do not stop to help accident victims, you can be fined up to $3,000, jailed up to a year, or both
  • Should you refuse to give your details or lie to LTA enforcement officers, you can be fined up to $5,000 and up to one year jail time

For vendors selling non-compliant devices

  • Fined up to $5,000, jailed up to 3 months, or both.

And all I can say is…
