Nowadays, it seems that visual trickery’s all the rage.
- Heavily doctored/filtered photos on Instagram
- Cool ass magic shows
- Your dad pulling you into a room and mimicking whacking motions while shouting ‘NO POINT CRYING LITTLE GIRL, YOU DESERVE TO BE PUNISHED’ for the benefit of your enraged mother who’s waiting outside
But here’s the thing. While some forms of visual trickery might be harmless, pleasant even, others might actually cause anticipatory hearts to break.
Like these famous “Gates of Heaven” over in Bali, for example.
Famous Bali “Gates of Heaven” On IG…
Lest you’re unaware, here are some pictures that were taken from Lempuyang Temple in Bali, where the famous “Gates of Heaven” stand tall.
Aesthetic visuals aside, the posts will commonly involve some variation of the gates of heaven or a motivational post on reflection.
Almost as if it was a photo that was intentionally designed to have the most visual impact on a photo-sharing site, as Mothership so aptly puts it.
Well, as it turns out;
They’re right.
… Heartbreakingly Revealed To Be A Photo Hack
Two days ago (3 July), a Twitter user by the name of Polina Marinova, tweeted the ugly truth behind the visual spectacle we have crowned the “Gates of Heaven”.
Proof that Instagram influencers have ruined everything👇
My hopes & dreams were shattered when I found out the “water” at the Gates of Heaven is actually just a piece of glass under an iPhone 😭 pic.twitter.com/oiahI5VCIo

Yes, ladies and gentlemen; the “Gates of Heaven”?
They wouldn’t look half as spectacular, had there not been a piece of glass to give it that ethereal effect.
Some Netizens look on the bright side of life
While many were bummed at the reality of the situation, some chose to take it more optimistically.
Like pointing out the presence of far less impressive water bodies, for example.

Though the place, despite its visual trickery at work, is still objectively pretty nonetheless.
And while an impossibly clear lake would surely have been a sight to behold, I gotta say;
It still looks aesthetic af.

After all, we’re there to see the “Gates of Heaven”.
Not the “Clear Lake of Heaven”. 🙂
